The First Century
Quatrains 81 - 90

Quatrain 81

D’humain troupeau neuf seront mis a’part
De judgment & conseil separés :
Leur sort sera devise en depart
Kappa, Theta, Lamda, morts, banise, esgarés.

Of the human troupe, nine will be set apart
Their judgment & counsel separated:
Their fate will be determined on departure
Kappa Theta Lamda, death, banished, astray.

Ambiguous

The only group of 9 that I know of is the United States Supreme Court, but I would be surprised if this refers to them. While the first two lines can refer to any or all of them, the last two lines do not refer to any of them.

Quatrain 82

Quand les colomnes de bois grande tremblée,
D’auster conducte couvette de rubriche :
Tant viendra dehors grande assemblée,
Trembler Vienne & le pays d’Austriche.

When the columns of good tremble greatly,
Of austere conduct covered with rubbish:
A great assembly will come to be outside,
Tremble Vienna and the Austrian land.

Congress of Vienna

This quatrain describes almost perfectly the Congress of Vienna. The columns of good are the radical thoughts that helped to shape the French Revolution. The congress was a very formalized affair, regal and austerely conducted, yet what came out of it was a reactionary rubbish where the princes of Europe tried, as much as possible, to establish their own houses back to the way it was before the Revolution. The great assembly was the opposing armies of Napoléon after he left Elba. Napoléon’s 100 days caused the Congress to declare Napoléon an outlaw and to commence the raising of large armies to destroy him. The full raising of the armies proved unnecessary after Waterloo, but during that time, Vienna and all of Austria did tremble at the thought that Napoléon might repeat his victories of lore and rule again.

Quatrain 83

La gent estrange divisera butins,
Saturn en Mars son regard furieux :
Horrible estrange aux Tosquans & Latins,
Grecs qui seront à frapper curieux.

The strange race will divide the booty,
Saturn to Mars their regard furious:
Horrible, strange in Tuscany and Latin lands,
Greeks will be curiously knocking.

Occupation of Greece, 1941

The second line refers to an astrological configuration. Either Saturn and Mars in horrible aspect (square or opposition) to each other, or these two planets in horrible aspect to other planets, with Mars in square to almost everything, including Saturn, and Saturn square to several planets – this occurred April 30th, 1941, the last day of the Nazi operation to occupy Greece.

The strange race are the Nazis. They dictated the terms of the occupation of Greece, which they had essentially captured; they got the critical points including Athens, their ally Bulgaria got a wide region allowing them an outlet to the Mediterranean Sea, and Italy got the bulk of Greece. The Greeks had fought hard and soon developed a resistance movement to fight the Axis.

Quatrain 84

Lune obscurcie aux profondes tenebres,
Son frere passe de couleur ferrugine :
Le grand caché long temps sous le tenebres,
Tiendra ser dans la plaie sanguine.

The moon is obscured by the darkness,
The sun is the color of blood,
The great hidden for a long time in the darkness,
Will hold iron in the bloody wound.

Future War

The first two lines can only occur after a nuclear holocaust or an immense explosion that shoots tons of debris into the atmosphere. When the Isle of Krakatoa exploded in the early 20th century, the debris from that one explosion dimmed the light somewhat and reddened sunsets worldwide for months. This is the consequence of explosions more numerous and more powerful, which push much more debris into the atmosphere (Quatrain 69 –Lucifer’s Hammer?) The last two lines refers to a very evil one, one who hid in the darkness for a long long time. By his will, the wound will not be allowed to heal, but will be opened anew through war.

Quatrain 85

Par la response de dame, roy troublé,
Ambassadeurs mespriseront leur vie :
Le grand ses freres contrefera doublé,
Par deux mourront, ire, haine, envie.

By the response of lady, King flustered,
Ambassadors will fear for their lives:
The two great brothers will forge their actions,
Two will die, ire, hate, trouble.

Murder of the Guise Brothers

The two great brothers who forged their actions were the Duke and Cardinal de Guise. They were killed by Henri III, of France. Henri’s statement, “Now I am king, the king of Paris is dead.” is reputed to have earned the reply of the Queen Mother, Catherine de Medici, “You have done the cutting, now you must sew it well,” which flustered the king. As for the last line, Paris was outraged and the nation went up in arms. It was definitely not a safe time in France for ambassadors from other lands.

Quatrain 86

La grand royne quand se verra vaincu,
Fera exces de malculin couraige :
Sus cheval, fluve, passera toute nue,
Suise par fer: à foy sera outrage.

When the great queen sees herself conquered,
Will make an excess of masculine courage:
On horseback, river, passing all uncovered,
Followed by iron: in faith will be outrage.

Flight of Mary, Queen of Scots

Since the time of Nostradamus, I can only see one queen who has fulfilled this quatrain. Mary, Queen of Scots and her flight after her defeat at the Battle of Langside. She had been imprisoned in Loch Leven Castle after being forced to abdicate by the nobility yet had managed to escape. After raising an army of 6000, she faced off against a much smaller force only for that force to emerge victorious. Defeated, she fled on horseback with the army of the victorious Morey, until she crossed the Solway Firth and entered England. The forces of Morey pressed her hard but were unable to catch up to her.

It must be acknowledged that Mary was very brave in her deeds, but she was overthrown and removed from power mainly because she was a Catholic and the forces of Morey, who supported her child son James, were Protestant. As a result, Nostradamus gave her all due credit and the pursuers all due condemnation. But it is likely that if the religions dispositions were reversed he would still have condemned the forces of Morey because they so clearly operated against their legitimate monarch, who was Mary.

Quatrain 87

Emofigée feu du centre de terre,
Fera trembler au tour de cité neuvue :
Deux grandsrochiers long temps seront la guerre,
Puis Arethusa rougira noveau fleuve.

Earth shaking fires from the center of the earth,
Will cause tremblers around the new city,
Two great rocks will war for a long time,
Then Arethusa will redden a new river.

Future Land Changes in Western Americas

The earth shaking fires of line 1 seems to indicate volcanic activity. Nostradamus’ description was based on a then acceptable belief that the fires of a volcano did come from the center of the earth, which in a sense it does. The two great rocks seems to indicate tectonic plate activity, where two great plates are grinding against each other. Likely places therefore are the Northwest of the United States (the Cascade Range which is highly volcanic) as well as the mountain ranges of Mexico (with their famous volcanoes). I do not know of any volcanoes in South America, the Andes mountain range seems to be more like the Sierra Nevada and the Rocky Mountains of the North American continent, but if there are, and they are also on the ring of fire where the South American Plate is colliding into the Pacific Plate, then that area would also be vulnerable to fulfilling this quatrain.

In the North America, possible cities are Seattle, Portland, Vancouver and Ciudad de México. Seattle Portland and Vancouver are located along the Cascade Mountain range, a string of volcanic mountains along the Pacific coast from central California to Washington and British Columbia. In Mexico, I am certain that the volcano near Ciudad de México screams out that the capital of Mexico is also a possible target for the fulfillment of this quatrain.

Arethusa was a nymph in Greek mythology who supposedly became a stream. The new river is either a river that springs into being or a river in the Americas. That the new river is red indicates either blood or reddish clay.

Note that the quatrain does not say that the city is destroyed, only that there will be tremblers caused by volcanic activity around the city. The end result is that there is either a new river or a new world river is dirtied, for the river is filled with either blood or clay.

Quatrain 88

Le divin mal surprenda le grand prince,
Un peu devant aura femme espoulée,
Son puy & credit à un coup viendra mince,
Conseil mourra pour la teste rasée.

The divine evil will surprise the great prince,
A little before he will have married a woman,
His support and credit in a blow becomes slim,
Council will die for the shaven head.

Napoléon Bonaparte

The shaven head can be no other than Napoléon Bonaparte; he was the one who brought the short cut hairstyle into fashion. Before he appered all men wore their hair long, after he appeared all wore it short. The woman he marries here is Marie Louise, Archduchess of Austria, which occurred in 1810. But in so many ways it was a turning point. Before, while he was married to Josephine, he was successful; nothing could go wrong. After he divorced Josephine and married Marie Louise, nothing could go right. Bernadotte, his loyal, and brilliant marshal who informally competed with him, turned against him. Napoléon agreed to let Bernadotte become king of Sweden, an event he later regretted when Bernadotte, then Crown Prince Charles XIV John, brought Sweden into the Sixth Coalition against Napoléon. His invasion of Spain started the Peninsular War that was to sap French strength, and he launched the invasion of Russia that was to prove so disastrous.

Quatrain 89

Tous ceux de Ilerde feront dedás Moselle,
Mettäs à mort tous ceux de Loyre & Seine :
Secours marin viendra pres d’haulte velle,
Quand Hespagnolz ouvirra toute veine.

All those of Ilerde will be in Moselle,
Putting to death those of the Loire and Seine:
Marine aid will come near the high wall,
When the Spanish open every vein.

Ambiguous

Moselle is most likely the Moselle valley in northeastern France. Those of the Loire and Seine are the French. Hespagnolz is obviously the Spanish. The key to the quatrain is the word ilerde. Nostradamus capitalized the first letter, so it is either a place, a person, or an anagram to a place or person. If a person, which I tend to believe, this has to refer to the future.

Quatrain 90

Bourdeaux, Poitiers, au son de la campane,
A grand classe ira jusques à l’Angon :
Contre Gauloys sera leur tramontane,
Quand monstre hydeux naistra pres de Orgon.

Bordeaux, Poitiers in the sound of the campaign
A great fleet will go as far as the Angon:
Against the Gauls will be their Tramontane,
When the hideous monster born near Orgon.

Future

Line 2 is curious. An Angon is an ancient weapon, a short javelin, used by the Franks and other Germanic peoples, including the Angles and the Saxons. It had a barbed head that was intended not to kill but to lodge in the enemy’s shields or body in such a way it could not be removed, and the head was protected by an iron shank that made it almost impossible to remove. Either the enemy soldier died, or his shield was quickly rendered useless and the soldier vulnerable. Orgon is a commune in southern France. The Tramontane is a classical name for the north wind. It comes from the Italian tramontana.

A fleet that throws Angons, “that goes as far as the Angon,” is in fact not a fleet that uses Angons but something that reminded Nostradamus of Angons. They are, in fact, modern day missiles. Ship to ship missiles are how modern day navies prepare to fight their wars. The missiles have a decent range, some over a thousand miles (1800 kilometers) and are normally used to seek out and destroy enemy ships. The longest ranged missiles can also be used in a thermonuclear capacity, carrying thermonuclear bombs to destroy enemy land based targets.

The Tramontane indicates that those against the Gauls will be the English. Why this is true will is curious to me. Will the two nations have a falling out, or will one be conquered and the other forced to fight their old friends, for friends the English and the French currently are, even if the friendship is somewhat testy.

The monster born near Orgon cannot be understood until the quatrain is fulfilled. This has to be left to the future to resolve.
