Le mouvemént de sens coeur, pieds & mains
Seront d’acord. Naples, Leon, Secille,
Glaifues, feux, eaux: puis aux nobles Romains,
Plongés tués mors par cerueau debile.

The movement of sense, heart, feet and hands,
Will be of accord, Naples, Leon, Sicily,
Swords, fires, waters: then to the noble Romans,
Plunged, killed, bit by a moronic brain.

Fascist Italy & Spain

Note on Interpretation: The only curiosity is the presence of Leon in the second line between Naples and Sicily, both of which are in Italy. The curiosity comes from the fact that there is no Leon or Lyon in Italy. There is a Lyon in France, which would make the quatrain unintelligible, but almost all the original sources agree that the name is Leon; this marks it as being the city of Leon, Spain. With this fact, the quatrain is quite intelligible.

Mussolini came to power October 31, 1922. Most of the places mentioned are in modern day Italy, but he did intervene in the Spanish Civil War, sending troops to fight on the side of Franco. It is estimated that between 50 and 60 thousand Italian troops saw action, which helped to establish a Fascist government in Spain.

The rest of the quatrain refers to the period of the Second World War, when Italy was plunged into the European war that would grow into a world war. By 1943, Mussolini’s brain had weakened considerably. He was no longer the masterful leader he used to be. When Hitler rescued him and set him up, he was a shadow of his former masterful self. In many ways, he acted in a moronic manner.

Dans peu dira faulce brute fragile,
De bas en hault eslevé promptement :
Puys en instant desloyale & liable,
Que de Veronne aura gouvernement.

Shortly after the false fragile brute leads,
From bottom of height raised promptly:
Then in an instant disloyal and liable,
Those of Verona will have government.

Benito Mussolini

Benito Mussolini presented himself as a brute. He rose to power through assassinations, intimidation and political skullduggery. His allies were the military, the industrialists, and the liberal right wing of the nation. And he became the leader of the nation of Italy.

He was born a commoner. His father was a blacksmith. His mother was a school teacher. The one of this low birth was the one who was raised to the heights of being the government of all Italy.

But he was disloyal to his monarch, Victor Emmanuel III, pushing him aside and becoming the true ruler of Italy from 1922 to 1943, regardless of what the king wanted for his nation and his people. From the beginning, the king was opposed to Mussolini. Mussolini’s power rested in the hands of the military and the industrialists. These elements, along with the right wingers, forced the king to accept Mussolini as the Prime Minister of Italy during the March on Rome. While he was in power, Mussolini took Italy along a course that the King highly disliked, resulting in the joining of Hitler and the entry of Italy into the Second World War as a full partner of the Germans. It was only the 1943 Allied invasion of Italy, an act that also prompted the Grand Fascist Council to depose Mussolini, that allowed Victor Emmanuel III to finally arrest and get rid of him.

Verona here stands for Italy, which Mussolini was certainly the leader of.

Les exiles par ire, haine intestine,
Feront au roy grand conjuration :
Secret mettront ennemis par la mine,
Et ses vieux siens contre eux sedition.

The exiles by ire, hatred intestine,
Will make against the king a great conspiracy:
Secretly they will place enemies at the source,
And the old his own against them sedition.

Ambiguous

This talks about exiles conspiring against their king. They place enemies at the source, or at a mine. And the oldest among the people are seditious against the king.

Unfortunately, I cannot place this one. I must leave this to the ingenuity of the reader.

De gent esclaue chansons, chantz & requestes,
Captifs par princes & seigneur aux prisons :
A l’auenir par idiots sans testes,
Seront receus par divins oraisons.

From the enslaved people, chants, songs, demands,
Princes captive, their Lord imprisoned,
In the future, by idiots without heads,
Will be accepted as divine utterances.

The French Revolution

The enslaved people here has to refer to the peasantry of France. For centuries the third estate, the common people, were crushed by the will of the first two estates, the Clergy and the Nobility. But once the revolt began, the nobility and the clergy and even their lord, King Louis XVI, were imprisoned. The last two lines refers to some of the noble statements made by some of the worst people of the early days of the Revolution. Great statements were made by Danton, Robespierre, Saint-Just and others who were guillotined by the fury of the Revolution for what they actually did, as opposed to what they said. Ironically, it was revolutionaries who executed revolutionaries. But their utterances were, and are today, received as the equivalent of divine utterances, especially in France.

Quatrain 15

Mars nous menasse par la force bellique,
Septante foys sera le sang espandre :
Auge & ruyne de l’Ecclesiastique,
Et plus ceux qui d’eux rien voudront entendre.

Mars should lead us by warlike force,
Seventy times will blood be caused to flow:
Rise and fall of the clergy,
And more those who want to hear nothing of them.

Continuing Quatrain?

This seems to be a general quatrain dealing with a very broad time-line. It seems to violate Nostradamus’s dictate of one. He wrote in his epistle to Cesar that each of the prophecies would deal with one event, one place and one time.

The closest I can come to following Nostradamus’s intent is that this must deal with a broad period of warfare. Seventy times will war commence. Seventy times will blood be shed.

That it has to be in Europe is beyond a doubt. That France is involved is axiomatic. But I doubt it only involves French wars, or wars that France was involved in. There would not be enough wars to cover the seventy.

Of interest are the third and fourth lines. The clergy rises and falls. Those who oppose the clergy also rises and falls, but to a greater degree.

Faulx à l’estang joinct vers le Sagitaire
En son hault AVGE de l’exaltation,
Peste, famine, mort de main militaire,
Le siecle approche de renouvation.

The scythe in the estang joined to Sagittarius,
At the high AVGE of exaltation,
Plague, famine, death from the military hand,
The century approaches the renovation.

Ambiguous

Note on Translation: I kept estang as it is without translating it because there is an Estang in France; it is a commune in the Gers department of France. That said, it also means Fish Pond. It is possible that Nostradamus is here giving us two meanings with one word.

Note on Interpretation: The scythe is Saturn. It is also the scythe of death. The first line can have a purely astrological interpretation – Saturn in Pisces (the fishes) joined to Sagittarius (in this case Jupiter). Or it can have a literal meaning: Death in Estang joined to the archers. Or, knowing Nostradamus, it can mean both.

This looks like a major quatrain. The clue is the word: AVGE. Since it was written in old French, it is likely AUGE. Regardless, this will occur before the turn of a century. But whether it has happened or will happen is unknown to me at this time.

If the first line refers to an astrological joining of Saturn and Jupiter in Pisces, there have been a few Saturn Jupiter conjunctions in Pisces since the quatrain was published. May 1583 and February 1643, by the Gregorian Callendar. It will not happen again until February 2259.

Par Quarante and l’Iris n’aparoistra,
Par quarante ans tous les jours sera veu :
La terre aride en sicciré croistra,
En grands deluges quand sera aperceu.

For forty years the rainbow will not be seen,
For forty years it will be seen every day:
The dry earth will grow more parched,
And there will be great floods when it is seen.

An Eighty Year Period

Nostradamus says what, but not where. Doubtless this is not worldwide. That said, the unspecified location is the key to this quatrain. Right now, the most likely regions are sections of Africa, which are enduring long periods of drought. But it would not surprise me to find that another area could be referred to.

Of course, the drought and rains may not be literal. The rain could be the rain of warfare. For 40 years, no rainbow is seen because there is no war. Then, for 40 years, it is seen every day.

Quatrain 18

Par la discorde negligence Gauloise,
Sera paissage à Mahommet ouvert :
De sang trempé la terre & mer Senoyse,
Le port Phocen de voilles & nefs couvert.

By Gaulic discord and negligence,
An opening will be made for the Muhammadans,
The land and sea of Siena will be soaked in blood,
The Phoenician port covered in sails.

Turkish Involvement in Last Hapsburg-Valois War

The lands of ancient Gaul included modern day France and northern Italy. Senoyse is obviously altered to rhyme with Gauloise of line 1. It can only be Siena, which is the ancient land of Tuscany, part of northern Italy. The Phoenician port is Marseilles, on the coast of Southern France. According to Garancières, it was called Port-Phocen by the ancients.

Garancières has a knowledge of his country that I do not have. He states that in the days of Francis I, father of Henry II, the French and the Turks entered into an alliance that was convenient to both sides. During the final Hapsburg-Valois war between Charles V and Henri II, Henri called for aid from the Turks, giving them a base at the French port of Marsailles which was for a brief time covered with Turkish sails. The Turks fought at least one major engagement near Siena, Italy, in support of the French.

Lors que serpens viendront circuit l’are,
Le sang Troyen Vexé les Hespaignes :
Par eux grand nombre en sera faicte tare,
Chief, fuyct cache aux mares dans les saignes.

When the serpents will come to encompass the alter,
The Trojan blood will be vexed by the Spanish:
Because of them a great number will suffer,
Leader, flees hidden in the pool in the blood.

Religious Wars

The Trojan Blood is beyond a doubt the monarchy of France. This has to refer to the Religious Wars. But when is the key.

The Spanish only started to interfere after Henri III had died and Henri de Navarre was the acknowledge heir of the throne of France. Felipe of Spain did all he could to support the Duc de Mayenne. This definitely vexed Henri de Navarre, who was not yet officially crowned King of France. Felipe’s interference also caused a great many people in France to suffer.

The serpents would therefore have to be the assassins of Henri Duc de Guise and the Cardinal de Guise. Henri III had summoned the Duc de Guise into a private chamber. Some say it was his bedroom, others claim it was a chapel. Whichever it was, the assassins pounced, killing the Duc. The next day, the same 45 killers took out the duc’s brother, the Cardinal de Guise. The consequence was that France was up in arms over the assassinations and much of the country revolted against the King. After Henri III was killed, the Duc de Mayenne, the new leader of the Catholic League, called for and got the aid of the Spanish.

The leader is likely the Duc de Mayenne. The pool of blood would in this case be the blood shed during the final years of the Religious Wars.

Tours, Orleans, Bloys, Angiers, Reims & Nantes,
Cités vexées par subit changement :
Par langues estranges seront tendues tentes,
Fleues, dards, Renes, terre & mer tremblement.

Tours, Orleans, Blois, Angers, Reims and Nantes,
Cities vexed by sudden change:
Tents will be pitched by those of foreign tongues,
Rivers, strings, Renes, earth and sea shaking.

Religious Wars

The city of Blois is the key to this quatrain. The cities of the first line are all cities in France. The religious wars were going strong. Those of the foreign tongue are the Spanish. Towards the end of the Religious wars, they intervened in the Wars on behalf of the Catholic League at the invitation of the Duc de Mayenne. The sudden changes were the results of the various Religious Wars, each of which were so disliked by one faction or another (Huguenots or Catholic League) that they would launch another war.

The only ambiguous word is Renes. Theophilus de Garenciéres used an original of Rennes, which was the capital of Brittany. However, I am uncertain about this. Strings could refer to bows as well as hang man’s nooses. The earth and sea shaking would have to be metaphorical due to the fury of the war. Still, with the influence of Blois being only during this time, the quatrain had to have been fulfilled during these wars.
