L’urn menace entor Ceucalion,
Vexée Sardaigne par la Punique fuste,
Apres que Libra lairra son Phaëton.
This has to refer to the future.
Nostradamus here gives two words that seem to call out for two different interpretations. They are loup or wolf, a reference to Adolph Hitler, and nay, identified in the 57th quatrain of this century as referring to Michael Ney, the Marshal of Napoléon.
The Hitler interpretation sounds very good. The prey would be the nations of Great Britain, France, United States and Soviet Union. The time would be 1945 as they close in around him. Hitler, the wolf and the attacker, was in extreme distress and he did not escape from the middle of the press, he was pressed in from all sides and eventually succumbed. But if we use the Hitler interpretation, the third line then reads: the born having in the front the last. This becomes nonsensical, blocking this nice interpretation.
Go back in time to 1813 and the quatrain is completely explained. The wolf and attacker in this case is Napoléon, the prey are Russia, Prussia, Austria, Spain, Portugal and Britain, as they closed in from all sides. Napoléon also did not escape from the middle of the press. The third line is a clear reference to Ney who was one of Napoléon’s great generals. Ney dared to confront his emperor and inform him that the army would not follow him any more. He was the last one to inform Napoléon that it was over, he was the front one selected by the other marshals to perform this dubious duty, explaining and fulfilling the third line.
Le gros trafficq du grand Lion changé,
La plus part tourne en pristine ruine :
Proye aux soldars par pille vendenge,
Par lura mont & Sueve Bruine.
The Jura Mountains are a small mountain range located north of the Alps, separating the Rhine and Rhone rivers. The Sweve were an old Germanic tribe who lived in various places of Austria, Switzerland and Germany. Of greatest interest here is line 1. Though the Bonhomme edition used the French Lyon, the Du Rosne and Rigaud editions used the English Lion. It is therefore evident that the Bonhomme edition was “edited” by Bonhomme and that Nostradamus did write the English word; consequently the first two lines have to refer to the Britannic nation. According to the quatrain, the British trade, upon which all its wealth and health depends on, will be hit hard. Note that Nostradamus does not say that it will be destroyed, just that the greater part will be ruined. Therefore, this will refer to a time when British trade will be savaged to a great degree.
This refers to the Battle of the Atlantic during the Second World War. France had already been conquered and Brest was available for German use. But the Battle of Britain had already been fought and British air power was in the ascent. The war would turn on the Battle of the Atlantic. Britain needed the shipping lanes kept open, Germany wanted those lanes closed up. It was a furious battle that Germany lost mainly because they did not focus on it. Even so, it resulted in a terrible strain for Britain. Much of its shipping was sunk (pristine ruins) by the German U-Boats. The threat of surface raiders sailing out of Brest only added to the strain. And of course, the actions of Admiral Darlan of Vichy were not too conducive to making the British rest easier. Only the entry of the United States and its immense shipbuilding program enabled the battle to go in favor of the British by the end of 1943.
Champagne could be the Champaign region of France or the Campagna region of Italy. I would not be surprised to find it is both. Regardless, there is a drought in Italy when it can hardly use it. At this time, the Balkan lands are being invaded, possibly by the future Islamic forces bent on regaining what they had lost. The last line has to wait till it is fulfilled for us to understand.
A Lyon faict dessus l’Aigle Celtique :
Le petit grand trop outre presevere,
Bruit d’armes au ciel, mer rogue Lygustique.
The little great one is indicative of Napoléon Bonaparte. The Celtic Eagle seemed to support this. The problem is the fourth line. Noise of arms in the sky, or the heavens. That would indicate modern warfare.
Unfortunately, this is one I cannot figure out. Therefore, I leave it to the ingenuity of the reader.
Naufraige a classe pres d’onde Hadriatique,
Egypt tremble augment Mahommetique,
L’Herault soy rendre à crier est commis.
That this refers to the future Islamic conquest, at its earlier stages, is beyond a doubt. The second line sounds like either artillery fire or rocket launching, which would place this squarely into the 20th century or beyond. The trembling of Egypt seems to place them against the imposing Islamic armies, which would mean that this occurs early in the struggle. The last line is informative. Normally, soy rendre is made out as if it is se rendre, or surrender, though this is not what Nostradamus wrote. What Nostradamus did write, the cry for the Islamic people to be very productive, does fit in the context of an anticipated long and bloody war of conquest.
A German Prince upon the golden throne is clue one. Clue two is the lady serving, no longer adored. While each nation believes their own throne to be golden, the golden throne to Nostradamus would be the golden throne to any Frenchman – the throne of France. And the lady is Marianne, the unofficial representative of the French Republic.
Only once has a German ruled France: Adolf Hitler was the German Prince. The lady, the French Republic, is no longer adored under the misrule of Pétain and Laval, instead she serves the interests of the Germans. As for the third line, well, I can only think that this is poetic in nature, so I would hazard the opinion that the servitude refers to the servitude of France. But what the waters refer to I am uncertain, unless it refers to religious, or baptismal waters, i.e. the church forced to be in servitude.
Mouton is a commune in the Charente department of France. Lutéce is the French name for Lutecia, an old Roman commune where Paris is now. Aix is in southern France.
Many commentators refer this to the future Henri V. Myself, I will make no such statements, except to acknowledge their claims.
Most modern commentators attribute this as to the friendship between the United States and Russia. The bloody one is, depending on how it is viewed, the great Anti-Christ or Hitler, though I understand that one tried to make Stalin the bloody one – saying that the bloody one was also a great master and a friend of the other, which was an interesting way of looking at it.
Being an American, I must disagree with this. It cannot apply to the future because the height of the power of the United States, the new land, was during the Second World. Today, as I write this, the occupation of a small far away country with just a few divisions is draining the resources of the country dry. But during the Second World War, an army twenty times the size, along with a gigantic navy and a powerful air force, hurled against two great and evil empires, and supplying arms to two other major nations as well as other forces, was but a minor effort. And the occupation of three defeated countries afterwards was not a major problem at all. Also, back then we were never friends with the Soviet Union – it was more of a working adversarial relationship held together by mutual hatred of Herr Hitler.
Therefore the timing therefore has to be the Second World War. The new land is definitely the United States, only its true power and potential was virtually unlimited in those days. It was defined as a gigantic cauldron – light a fire under it and there was no limit to the amount of power it could generate.
The two great masters were the masters of the seas – Britain and the United States. After Pearl Harbor, they were allies, committed to the irrevocable destruction of both the Nazi and Imperialist Japanese threats. Though they suffered setbacks, it was apparent even to Hitler, their chief enemy, that he was up against a strong fight to the end.
And the bloody one, the man of blood that some people translate sanguinaire into? That can only be Adolf Hitler. Though several people have been called the man of blood, most notably Charles I of Britain for opposing the will of Parliament, it is most aptly applied to the Fuhrer for his rabid desire for war and his murderous rage against the Jewish faith.
Note: There is some claims that the bloody one was Joseph Stalin. Admittedly this is a possibility, Stalin’s reign was exceptionally bloody and he is officially responsible for more murders and a greater genocide than Hitler committed. Yet I discount it because Hitler was so much bloodier than Stalin ever was over the key time frame of 1933 – 1945, the years that both were in power in their respective countries. Plus there is strong evidence that often Stalin’s hands were tied by the rest of the membership of the Presidium, the Political Bureau, or Politburo, of the Communist Party of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. Stalin may have been its chairman, but he was not its only member – he was merely the first among equals and sometimes even he had to bow to the will of the majority whereas Hitler truly ruled alone, bowing to nobody. Hitler was solely responsible for the deaths in the extermination camps of so many millions, many millions more than Stalin or the Political Bureau of the Soviet Union committed over the same time frame of 1933 – 1945. Adding to this the death tolls of the Eastern Front, which was launched by Herr Hitler (making him responsible for the military deaths on both sides), and it is obvious that Hitler has to be the bloody one.
Par vie & mort changé regne d’Ongrie,
La loy sera plus aspre que service,
Leur grand cité d’urlemens plaincts & crie,
Castor & Pollux ennemis dans la lyce.
This refers to the forced Stalinization of Hungary in 1945. During the Second World War, Hungary had been a servant of Adolf Hitler and the Nazis. Hungary had participated in the partition of Czeckoslovakia and hungarian troops had participated in the attack of the Soviet Union. Unfortunately for Hungary, this service ended when the Soviets overran the country in 1945. On the 13th of February, the Hungarian capital, Budapest, surrendered unconditionally to the Soviets. Stalin elevated a tyrant, Mátyás Rákosi, who proceeded to Stalinize the country. Thousands were killed. Over a hundred thousand were arrested. Most of the intellectuals were dismissed. Times were bad in Hungary and they kept getting worse. Rákosi was unable to make the lands of Hungary grow food. Things got so bad he was finally replaced by Nagi, on Khrushchev’s orders. Unfortunately, he retained control of the party. A power struggle ensued that Nagi lost. But the rule of the government was unbearable to the people of Hungary. They revolted, resulting in the supression of Hungary by Soviet forces.
