La grande bande & secte crucigere,
Se dressera en Mesopotamie :
Du proche fleuve compaignie legiere,
Que telle loy tiendra pour ennemie.
This is obviously the future. The sect indicates a strong Protestant leaning. The company that is next to the nearby river, however, holds them for the enemy. Since Christianity is the law, according to Nostradamus, this means that the ones of the nearby band are followers of Islam. This can only occur towards the end of the future terrible war when Islam reaches for all. This seems to indicate that the result will not be what the Islamic leaders wanted.
Proche del duero par mer Tyrrene close,
Viendra precer les grands monts Pyrenees :
La main plus courte & sa percee gloze,
A Carcassonne conduitra ses menees.
Note on Translation and Originals: The Rigaud edition had the sea as the mer Cyrrene. I could not use the Italian Tyrenian sea, as that would be very far away from the only Duero I found, and definitely far from the Pyrenees Mountains. The quatrain has a Spanish feel to it, which I have tried to follow.
Most of Wellington’s victories in the closing years were in the region today known as Leon-Castille. The Ribera del Duero is part of this region. It was near here that Wellington finally crossed the Pyrenees Mountains and entered France. I am uncertain as to what purpose Carcassone played at this time, but the first two lines are so exacting that this can be interpreted by nothing else.
Romain pouvoir sera du tout abas,
Son grand voysin imiter ses vestiges :
Occultes haines civiles, & debats
Retarderont aux bouffons leurs foilies.
The key is in the first line. Nostradamus does not say Italian power, but Roman power. This is a direct reference to Benito Mussolini, Il Duce, who sought to restore the grandeur of the Roman Empire. His great neighbor was his great neighbor to the north, Adolf Hitler, Der Fuhrer, who rose to power in much the same way Mussolini did. But their great hatred of Communism, Democracy, and everything else, including their very interestingly one sided discussions, ultimately stopped them. Mussolini’s Italy was the first to tumble. Hitler’s Germany followed within a couple of years.
Le chef de Perse remplira grand Olchade,
Classe trireme contre gent Mahometique
De Parthe, & Mede, & piller les Cyclades,
Repos long temps au grand port Ionique.
Line 2 ties this to Lepanto, of this there is no doubt. It is known that after the Christian nations smashed the Turkish fleet at Lepanto, the Shaw of Iran (modern day Persia) took the opportunity to attack the Turkish armies. His forces captured important provinces. A long wait off the west coast of Turkey (Ionia) commenced. With the Europeans having destroyed the western fleet, and the Persians attacking from the east, it was not an easy time for the Turkish empire.
It is true that within a year the fleet had been rebuilt, and the Christian nations, squabbling amongst themselves let the Turks regain their numerical predominance in the east. But the loss of so many experienced sailors told heavily. The Turks expansionist policies were ended. They consolidated, postured, and succeeded in keeping or recapturing what they had conquered, but they never really threatened via the sea again.
Quand le sepulcre du grand Romain trouvé,
Le jour apres sera esleu pontife :
Du senat gueres il ne sera prouvé,
Empoisonné son sang au sacré scyphe.
Note on originals: The Du Rosne edition used the word guieres instead of the word gueres in the third line, which was used by all the other editions.
This is obviously talking about the election of a pope. It sounds like the College of Cardinals, the Senate of the Catholic Church, will be sharply divided over the election. The last line can be taken many ways. The key is the first line - the tomb of the great Roman must be found the day before the election of this pope.
Le grand baillif d’Orleans mis à mort,
Sera par un de sang vindicatif :
De mort merite ne mourra, ne par sort,
Des pieds & mains mal le faisoit captif.
This has been attributed to Jerôme Groslot, a leading Huguenot and the Bailiff of Orleans. He had been condemned to death by the Inquisition for allowing the city of Orleans to fall to the Huguenots during the furious Religious Wars.
I write this only because I am unable to fully verify this; that said, there is nobody else who could have done this.
Une nouvele secte de Philosophes,
Mesprisant mort, or, honneurs & richesses :
De monts Germains ne seront limitrophes,
A les ensuire auront appuy & presses.
The philosophers of Communism scorned material good, for all that Communism was the most materialistic of all philosophies to ever come out of the mind of men. It found its main source in the writings of Karl Marx and Frederick Engels, two German born thinkers. It spread into a worldwide force, permanently influenced by these two writers. Due to their influence, Communism would achieve a force and power that would last for a long, long time.
Peuple sans chef d’Espagne & d’Italie,
Morts, profligés dedans le Cherronesse :
Leur dict trahi par legiere foile,
Le sang nager par tout à la traverse.
Chersonese was an ancient Greek colony in the Crimean peninsula. It was located not far from modern day Sevastopol. It was the capital of the region the Greeks knew as Tauratia, which we now know as the Crimea. Therefore, it represents the Ukraine region of the Soviet Union, of which the Crimean peninsula was a part of.
As is known, Italy sent many divisions to the Eastern Front where they served with Army Group South, the army group that fought in the Ukraine and would help capture Sevastapol. What is not so well known is that in order to placate Hitler and his demands for Spanish aid, and maybe in thanks for what Hitler did for Franco during the Spanish Civil War, Spain sent one, and only one, division to the front as well, the 250th Infantry Division, which also fought in Army Group South. The fate of the Italian forces is well known. The Spanish division was sent in gratitude by Franco for Hitler’s aid during the Spanish Civil War, but was sent under condition that it only fight against the Communists and not against the western democracies. Under orders, remnants of the division returned to Spain in late 1943, though several thousand members deserted the Spanish colors, choosling to remain and fight against the Communists.
Grand exercite conduict par jouvenceau,
Sie viendra rendre aux mains des ennemis :
Mais le viellart nay au demi pourceau,
Fera Chalon & Mascon estre amis.
Chalon and Macon are cities in France, which renders this quatrain interesting. The half-pig appears in another quatrain and seems to represent the mask of a high flying military aircraft pilot.
The closest approximation (this is not the true interpretation, but an example of the first two lines) would be De Gaulle, who when young wrote a book about modern warfare. His desire to combine heavy tanks and aircraft into a powerful fist to smash through enemy lines was used, interestingly enough, not by the French, but by the Germans, who became the enemies of France. Of course, that is writing a book, not conducting an exercise, but you get the idea.
Le grand Bretagne comprinse l’Angleterre
Viendra par eaux si hault à inunder
La ligue neusue d’Asonne sera guerre,
Que contre eux ils se viendront bander.
The kingdom of Great Britain came into existence 1709. Before that, England and Scotland were separate kingdoms. The Act of Union unified the two kingdoms. So this quatrain has to occur after that date.
Ausonia is a region of Italy. Here it stands for all of Italy.
From what I can tell, Britain will be flooded and the Italians (Venice?) will be struggling to hold back flood waters. This could be a reference to a major flood. I certainly do not know of any situation that has fulfilled this quatrain. But with global warming hitting, and being denied by so many major businesses, it is very likely that we are going to see the fulfillment of this quatrain very soon.
