The First Century
Quatrains 91 - 100

Quatrain 91

Au duc Gaulois contrainct batter au duelle,
La nef Mellele monarch n’approchera,
Tott accusé, prison perpectuelle,
Son fils regner avant mort taschera.

The Gaulic duke constrained to fight a duel,
The Mellele ship the monarch approaches,
Wrongly accused, perpetually imprisoned,
His son reigns before his death.

Ambiguous

This sounds like a member of the nobility of France is falsely accused and imprisoned. He dies in prison while his son assumes the governance of the duchy. The part of the Mellele ship is curious.

Quatrain 92

Teste tranchee du vaillant capitaine,
Sera gettee devant son adversaire :
Son corps pendu de sa classe à l’antenne,
Confus suira par rames à vent contraire.

Head cut off the courageous captain,
Will be thrown down in front of his adversary,
His body hung on the antenna of the ship,
Confused will run away by oars with an opposite wind.

Future

The antenna is what gives this away as being modern. Until radio came about, antenna were limited to insects, which Nostradamus would have known about. Note the part on line 4. No ship uses ores any more, but the fact that it is running against the wind, under its own power, indicates a modern powered boat. I do not know who the courageous captain will be, but even if he proves to be an enemy, he has my sympathy.

Quatrain 93

Un serpent veu proche du lict royal,
Sera par dame nuict chiens n’abayeront :
Lors naistre en france un Prince tant royal,
Du ceil venu tous les Princes verront.

A serpent seen near the royal bed,
By a lady at night the dogs do not bark:
Then born in France a Prince so royal,
From heaven he comes, all the Princes will see.

Birth of Louis XIV

I am no lover of monarchy, being a confirmed believer in republics. That said, I must admit that sometimes a good prince, one who does a very good job, does emerge. This is the birth of one of these rare princes who, while he was not up to the level of Henri IV, was still overall an excellent monarch.

When the future Louis XIV was born, his parents, Louis XIII and Anne d’Autriche, had no living children for twenty three years. There is even some doubt that Louis XIII was the father of Louis XIV, some serious arguments can be made that he was Mazarin’s son. If true, the guards, the “dogs” certainly did not make any announcements. And the event that is attributed to Louis’s conception, a stormy night that prevented Louis XIII from traveling to Saint Maur and instead dallying with Anne, could have been stage managed. Nevertheless, it is certainly true that his birth was hailed as a miraculous event, a gift of heaven, an answer to numerous prayers.

Louis XIV, the Sun King, was every inch a king. In makeup and ability, he could do few things. The only thing he was suited for was the only thing he was born to do – be a king. His life represented the epitomy of absolute monarchy in all of Europe. To his credit he very wisely curbed the power of the Nobility, making them dilatants at Versailles, while the real government was in the hands of expert commoners who were members of a council he always led. True to the fourth line, all the princes of Europe tried to emulate him, including James II of England.

Quatrain 94

Deux grans freres seront chassez d’Espaigne,
L’aisne vaincu sous les monts Pyrenees :
Rougir mer, Rosne sang leman d’Alemaigne,
Narbon, Blyterre, d’Agath contaminees.

Two great brothers will be chassed out of Spain,
The elder overcome under the Pyrenees mountains:
The sea reddened, the Rhone bloodied Leman of Germany,
Narbon, Blyterre of Agath contaminated.

Ambiguous

I am not too familiar with Spanish history, so I will have to leave this to one who knows Spanish history. Knowing Nostradamus, I doubt that the two are real brothers. More likely, they may be monks or nobles of relatively equal ranking and importance in Spain.

Quatrain 95

Le regne à deux l’aislé bein peutiendront,
Trois and sept moys passés seront la guerre,
Les deux vestales contre rebelleront,
Victor puis nay en Armonique terre.

The reign left to two they will hold it briefly,
Three years seven months passed will be the war,
The two vestals will rebel against them,
Victor then born in Armonique land.

The Union of the Two Henri’s / Religious Wars?

Henri de Guise was dead. Paris was up in arms. Henri III had to flee. The Catholic League selected the Duc de Mayenne (brother of Guise) to lead them. Henri III, following the Salic Law, proclaimed Henri de Navarre of the House of Bourbon his heir. A few months later, Henri III was dead.

This is the most logical interpretation. However, several things stop me from claiming this is correct. First, I am not certain about Henri’s movements during this time. Second, there is the little issue of the three years seven months. With Henri III assassinated in August 1589, 3 years 7 months would bring up March 1593, in which nothing significant seems to have happened. He would not declare till May of 1593 that “Paris is worth a mass,” though he was most likely leaning in that direction at that time. Still, Henri IV moved around a lot during this time. There is an Armorique which is part of Western Brittany. He could have arrived in western Brittany during that month.

I can think of no other interpretation for this quatrain. So I will have to leave it to the knowledge of the reader.

Quatrain 96

La sœur aisnée de l’isle Brittanique,
Quinze ans devant le frete aura naissance :
Par son promis moyennant verrifique,
Succedera au regne de balance.

The elder sister from the Britannic Isle,
Fifteen years born before the brother:
By what is promised her and by verified truth,
Will succeed to the kingdom of the balance.

The United States of America

The United States was born 1776. As it was a republic it was a female under the general terminology utilized by Nostradamus. Fifteen years later in 1791, the predecessor to the French Republic, the French Constitutional Monarchy, was born. The constitutional monarchy was a monarchy, therefore it was a male by the same general terminology that Nostradamus used. The United States was a republic, therefore it was a female. Of interest is the tie to the Britannic Isle, the United States came from the British nation. One clue is found in the first line. It is true that a standard translation of de is “of” but another possible translation, and the one that is likely true, is the word “from.” It was from that I used and this makes the quatrain completely accurate.

Note Nostradamus’ promise of the last two lines. The kingdom of the Balance was held by Britain for three hundred years, ever since the Spanish lost their efforts to conquer England with the defeat of the Spanish Armada. It was Britain that was constantly opposing nations that tried to upset the balance of power and gain control over all of Europe. These last two lines would be fulfilled during World War II, as the United States assumed the mantle of the Kingdom of the Balance, opposing the Soviet Union and the People’s Republic of China, the two nations that would have gained control of the entire world if they had their way.

Quatrain 97

L’an que Mercure, Mars, Venus rettrograde,
Du grand Monarque la ligne ne faillir :
Esleu du peuple l’vsitant pres de Gagdole,
Qu’en paix & regne viendra sont enuiellir.

The year that Mercury, Mars and Venus are retrograde,
The line of the Great Monarch will not fail:
Elected of the people, the usitant near Gagdole,
That in peace and reign will come to a while.

Future

Mars goes retrograde every two years. Mercury three times a year, Venus at least once a year, often twice. It could refer to a year when all three are retrograde at the same time, a not too common occurrence but one that does happen periodically. The Great Monarch is Louis XIV. His contemporaries gave him that name, so it is stuck with him. His line is, of course, his descendants.

The only one of his line who could be called an elected King was Louis XVI. He became a constitutional monarch during 1791. Mars was retrograde early that year, though while Venus was also retrograde, Mercury was not – Mercury would become retrograde in other times during the year. And the last line definitely does not refer to him, for he did not reign in peace after he became a constitutional monarch. Also, as far as I know, the French lineage of Louis is extinct, though there are some pretenders to the throne.

Of course, this could refer to the Spanish descendant of Louis XIV. Juan Carlos I, a direct descendant of Louis XIV, is the constitutional monarch of Spain. But Mars was not retrograde the year he assumed the throne (1975).

Most likely, this refers to a future Spanish king, though it could refer to the future French monarchy. The key is the third line. l’vsitant I cannot translate though many translators translate it into Portuguese. I cannot find Gagdole though, either as a translation or as a location. Some translators claim l’vsitant is actually lusitant, Portuguese and Gagdole is actually Gaudole, from which they gain such Portuguese locations as Cadiz and Guarda, but while the first is possible, I seriously doubt the second. Consequently I must leave this to the reader to figure out.

Quatrain 98

Les Albanois passetont dedans Rome,
Moyennant Langres demipler affublés,
Marquis & Duc ne pardonnes à homme.
Feu, sang, morbilles point d’eau, faillir les bledz.

The Albanians will pass inside Rome,
For Langres half-helmets decked out,
Marquise and Duke will pardon no man,
Fire, blood, Smallpox, watering place, villages to fail.

Future

The Albanoi people are the ancestors of the current Albanians. They lived in central to northern Albania. So, it is either this people, or a nation that controls them. That said, the Turkish Empire, which controlled Albania, were prevented from marching through Rome by the Austrians. The Albanians certainly did not do so during the 20th century. Therefore, this has to be the future.

The second line is interesting, but the last two lines are self-explanatory. The last line has a major concern. Smallpox is a disease declared eradicated by the World Health Organization. Should a country harbor the smallpox virus and use it in a war, the resulting plague would be devastating, with millions killed. Nostradamus was a physician, he would recognize the disease if he saw it, and he would certainly know how to distinguish it from another, similar though lesser disease, like chickenpox. We can only hope that this is one quatrain that will never be fulfilled.

Quatrain 99

L’aisne vaillant de la fille du roy,
Repoussera si profond les Celtiques :
Qu’il mettra foudres combien en tel arroy,
Peu & loing puis profond es Hesperiques.

The courageous eldest son of the king’s daughter,
Will push back the Celts so deep:
That he will cast lighting, so many in such an array,
Few and distant then deep into the Hesperias.

Future

The part about lightning being cast is a clear indication of an electrical weapon of some sort. Nostradamus would not have any knowledge of electricity, but he would be smart enough to realize that what he saw was powered by something that was similar to lighting, so his description of lightning is very apt. The part about the Hesperia is a curious point, it refers to Italy.

Quatrain 100

De feu celeste au Royal edifice,
Quant la lumiere de Mars deffaillira :
Sept mois grand guerre, mort gent de malefice,
Rouen, Evreux, au Roy ne faillira.

From the celestial fire on the Royal edifice,
When the light of Mars fails:
Seven months great war, death by malevolence,
Rouen, Evreux, not fail the king.

Franco-Prussian War

The key is the third line. Seven months of severe war. While fighting in the Franco Prussian War did not last up to exactly seven months, it was in the seventh month that the war ground to a halt.

The war started on the 19th of July in 1770. The French lost battle after battle, though Gravelotte showed that if the French had stayed on a consistent defensive battle Germany would have lost the war through all the phyrric victories they won. Still, ineptitude reigned throughout the French forces. Napoléon III surrendered his forces at Sedan on the 2nd of September. Bazaine surrendered at Metz on the 10th of October.

The seventh month saw the war grind to a halt. The Battle of Saint Quintin, the last attempt to relieve Paris, failed on the 18th of January, 1771. The government capitulated on the 28th of January, surrendering Paris. The last fighting of the war took place near Orleans as Gambetta launched a last offensive against the Prussians at the end of January. It failed and by the 5th of February, Gambetta gave up.

The light of Mars was the light of war. War is what brought down the Imperial government of Napoléon III. Following the collapse, the Third Republic was established. And the last line refers to regions that had been strongly monarchist in nature for ages. They stood by Napoléon, just as they had stood by the house of Capet.
