The Fifth Century
Quatrains 61 - 70

Quatrain 61

L’enfant du grand n’estant à sa naissance,
Subjuguera les haultz monts Apennis :
Fera trembler tous ceux de la balance
Et des monts feux jusques à mont Senis.

The child of the great that was not at the birth,
Subjugate the high Apennine mountains:
Will make those of the balance tremble
And of the mounts fires as far as Mount Senis.

Mussolini

There is no mount Senis, but there is a Senis, a commune in Sardinia. The Apennine Mountains are the mountain range of Italy. The Italian flavor of the quatrain is therefore apparent. Those of the Balance are either the British or the Americans, depending on whether this occurs up to or after the Second World War.

The first line is the most difficult to figure out. But it is evident from certain articles that Benito Mussolini’s father, Alessandro Mussolini, a blacksmith and anarchist, was also at one point an important person in the Risorgimento, the unification of Italy. No, he was not a top person. But he seemed to have been important enough to have been intimate with Garibaldi and may have been one of the officers of the thousand. He was also at one point an important person with the Anarchist movement, though at the time that Benito was born, he was just a minor person.

Benito Mussolini subjugated all of Italy, represented by the Apennine Mountains. The kingdom of the Balance was, because of the timing, Britain. They were certainly disquieted by what Mussolini achieved and did, especially the Italian conquest of Abyssinia and Albania before active hostilities commenced in 1940. And the part about Mount Senis merely refers to his popularity throughout Italy, which was fairly strong up to the beginning of the World War.

Quatrain 62

Sur les rochers sang on les verra plouvoir,
Sol Orient, Saturne Occidental :
Pres Orgon guerre, à Rome grand mal voir,
Nefs parfondrees & prins le Tridental.

On the rocks blood will be seen to rain,
Sun in the East, Saturn the West:
Near Orgon war, at Rome great evil seen,
Navies thrown away and the Trident taken. .

Götterdämmerung, 1944

Orgon is in southern France, not far from Marseilles, it was near the beachheads of Operation Dragoon which landed in southern France in 1944.

This quatrain refers to the destruction of the Axis cause, the invasions of France, the allied drive up the Italian boot, and the destruction of the German Army Group Center by the Soviets, all of which occurred in 1944. The Sun, the light of glory, was with the Soviets who were the ultimate victors of the Second World War. The west had Saturnian responsibilities and trouble heaped upon it. The last line refers to the navies that were being use. The German, Italian and Japanese navies had been all but destroyed by this time, the British and American navies were supreme.

Quatrain 63

De vaine emprise l’honneur indue plaincte,
Gallotz errás par latins froit, faim, vagues :
Non loing du Tymbre de sang la terre taincte,
Et sur humains seront diverses plagues.

From the vain enterprise the honor and undue complaint,
Galleys tossed about by the Latins, cold, hunger, crazy:
Not far from the Tiber the land stained with blood,
And upon humanity will be diverse plagues.

World War II, the Italian Campaign

The first line refers to Mussolini and the Fascist desire to have a Second Roman Empire. This was a vain enterprise because the Italian military really did not want to participate in any empire building. The galleys were the Italian Fleet, which was ill used by the Italians in the Second World War. The ships themselves were top notch, but the skill of the naval commanders was lacking, most likely deliberately. The blood around the Tiber refers to the Anzio landing, which was not far from Rome; it was a bloody hell for a while. The plagues upon mankind were several: the war and the Holocaust.

Quatrain 64

Les assemblés par repoz du grand nombre,
Par terre & mer conseil contremandé :
Pres del’Automne Gennes, Nice de l’ombre
Par champs & villes le chef contrebandé.

The assemblies of the great numbers by rest,
By land and sea their counsel countermanded:
Near Automne, Genoa, Nice of the shadow
By fields and villages the leader opposed.

Ambiguous

Note on original: The Du Rosne had Automne on line 3, while the Rigaud had Autonne.

Genoa is in Italy, Nice is in France, both are on the Mediterranean coast. I cannot find Automne, but based on the flavor of the quatrain, which cries out strongly of the French/Italian Riviera, I would suspect that Automne is somewhere in that area. The rest of the quatrain is self-explanatory.

Quatrain 65

Subit venu l’effrayeur fera grande,
Des principaulx de l’affaire cachés :
et dame en braise plus ne sera en vene,
Ce peu à feront les grans fachés.

Come suddenly the terror will be great,
The principals of the affair hidden:
And the lady in the embers will not be in sight,
This in a little while will make the great angry.

Future

The lady most likely refers to democracy or democratic institutions. The great ones would be the leaders of Europe and the Americas who are dedicated to democratic institutions. I can hazard that this would refer to the future war that is coming up. However, I am not certain.

Quatrain 66

Soubz les antiques edifices festaulx,
Non esloignes d’aqueduct ruyne :
De Sol & Lune font les luisans metaulx,
Ardante lampe Trajan d’or burine.

Under the ancient vestal edifices,
Not far from the ruined aqueduct:
Of the Sun and Moon will be the glittering metals,
Trajan’s ardent lamp burnished with gold.

Future

I do not know if there is a literal meaning to the fourth line or if it is a analogical meaning, but it must be kept in mind that Trajan was one of the truly great emperors of Rome. The ruined aqueducts seems to indicate somewhere in or near the city of Rome. In its ancient days, Rome was fed by water from 17 aqueducts, of which 4 or 5 still operate. The metals of the Sun and Moon are gold and silver respectively. Line 1 will need to wait till the quatrain is fulfilled before it can be understood. It holds the key to proper understanding.

Quatrain 67

Quant chef Perouse n’ofera sa runique
Sens an couvert tout nuds s’expolier :
Seront prins sept faict Aristocratique,
Le pere & fils mors par poincte au colier.

As the leader of Perouse will not dare the tunic
Sense in place setting being nude and exploited:
The seven Aristocrats will be dead,
Father and son killed by thrusts from fury.

Sixtus & the Valois Children

Pope Sixtus V came from Perouse. He had overextended himself by excommunicating Henri de Navarre and, having lost England to Henri VIII, dared not do the same to Henri III of France. Nevertheless, Henri III, last reigning monarch of the seven children of Henri II and Catherine de Medici was killed by Jacques Clement. The last line is interesting. Colier is obviously an altered word made to rhyme with expolier of line 2. Most commentators translate colier to be neck – col. But a more accurate translation seems to be colére, fury. This ties it to Henri II and Henri III, both of whom were pierced through violence. While it is true that it is a bit of a stretch with Henri II, it is still true that the lance of his friend the Earl of Montgomery pierced his eye, a violent thrust if there ever was one. The death of Henri III is furious in a much more obvious way, a stab from the front with deliberate furious intent that pierced him.

Quatrain 68

Dans le Danube & du Rin viendra boire,
Le grand Chameau ne s’en repentira :
Trembler du Rosne & plus foix ceux de Loire,
Et pres des Alpes coq le ruinera.

In the Danube and the Rhine will come to drink,
The great Camel will not regret it:
Tremble those of the Rhone and more those of the Loire,
Near the Alps the Cock will ruin it.

Future

The symbolism is quite obvious. Camels stand for Arabs. The great camel stands for a great Arab. The Rhine and Danube stand for Germany and Austria, along with all the countries along the way, especially in the Balkan lands. This is obviously towards the beginning of the great future Arab invasion of Europe. The last line is interesting. Does it mean that the French will inflict a decisive defeat on the Arabs early on? Or is it like some of the World War II quatrains, referring more towards the end of the war? In either case, the French will eventually inflict a crushing defeat on the Arabs somewhere near the Alpine Mountains. We do not know if it is towards the beginning, or towards the end.

Quatrain 69

Plus ne sera le grand en faulx fommeil,
L’inquietude viendra prendre repoz :
Dresser phalange d’or, azur, & vermeil,
Subjuguer Affrique la ronger jusques oz.

The great one no more in his wrong sleep,
The anxiety will come to capture peace:
Raise a phalanx of gold, azure and vermilion,
Subjugate Africa chew up the bones.

FUTURE! – Pan-Arabic Invasion of Africa

This has been attributed by multiple interpreters as being the ascension of Louis Philippe to the throne of France. The third line, however, gives colors that are not of France – Red, Yellow, Blue. This line, with its implications should have been a warning that they were wrong. Yet interpreters have consistently focused on Louis Philippe.

The reason they were wrong is that there is another prophecy concerning an army using those very same colors. In the biblical Book of Revelations, the follow passage is written:

Then the sixth angel blew his trumpet. I heard a voice coming from the four corners of the gold altar standing before God. The voice said to the sixth angel, “Release the four angels who are bound at the great River Euphrates!” The four angels were released: for this very hour of this very day of this very month and year they had been kept ready to kill a third of all mankind. I was told the number of the mounted troops: it was two hundred thousand thousand (two hundred million). And in my vision I saw the horses and their riders: they had breastplates red as fire, blue as sapphire, and yellow as sulfur. The horses heads were like lion’s heads, and from their mouths came out fire, smoke and sulfur,

The tie between the two prophecies is quite apparent. Golden Sulfur, Fiery Vermilion and Azure Sapphire: Yellow, Red and Blue. Nostradamus is obviously tying this quatrain to the Biblical prophecy. It is one of the times when the objection that he did tie it to Biblical prophecy is a valid objection. But the question is, did Nostradamus make a mistake and tie it or did he see something that we do not yet see? Or was it a poetic tie, much as his use of Virgil and Homer often were?

Assuming that Nostradamus did see something, and given his track record it is probable, then this could very well be the color of the banner of a future Islamic State.

With this in mind, this becomes a quatrain dealing with the early days of the future Islamic invasion. Africa is the target, according to the quatrain they succeed.

This said, the first two lines of the quatrain falls into place, almost as if it was laying down in simplicity. The greatest one is the dreaded Anti-Christ. Peace, desired by all, will be defeated by anxiety.

Quatrain 70

Des regions subiectes à la Balance,
Feront troubler les monts par grand guerre
Captifz tout sexe deu & tout Bisance,
Qui on criera à l’aube terre à terre.

In the regions subject to the Balance,
The mountains will be troubled by great war
Captives all of the sex deceived and all Byzantium,
Which at dawn they will shout land to land.

Ambiguous

Before 1945, the Kingdom of the Balance was Great Britain. After 1945, it was the United States. As I see it, this quatrain could refer to either. Byzantium refers to Istanbul, the one time capital of the Ottoman Empire. There were times when the British intervened in Ottoman affairs, especially during the 19th century, or even the First World War. If this quatrain refers to one of those times, then it could be easy to explain. However, if it refers to the future wars, then the Kingdom of the Balance would have to be the United States. At least up to the collapse of the Soviet Union when the US was for all intents and purposes the sole superpower. Beyond this, I cannot say much.
