The Second Century
Quatrains 71 - 80

Quatrain 71

Les exilés en Secile viendront,
Pour delivrer de faim la gent estrange :
Au point du jour les Celtes luy faudront,
La vie demeure à raison: roy se range.

The exiles will come into Sicily,
To deliver from hunger the strange nation,
At daybreak the Celts will fail them,
Life resides for reason: the king forms a line.

Italian Campaign, World War II

The exiles are the French exiles who were exiled from their homeland. Here they refer to the Allied forces who landed and captured Sicily during Operation Husky. The Italian forces were waiting for the invasion, indeed many seemed to want it. The strange nation is the Fascist nation of Il Duce. Almost alone, he wanted to revive the glory of the Roman Empire, something that most Italians really did not care about. The hunger the Italians wanted was peace, the peace to live their own lives and to be themselves. But the Celts, in this case the peoples of the Po river valley, failed the rest of Italy at this time. The Germans intervened. This forced several lines to be drawn. Germany, under its “king” Adolf Hitler, made the Gustav Line. The Italian king, Victor Emmanuel, drew a metaphorical “line in the sand” and ordered the Italian people to fight the Germans as invaders.

Quatrain 72

Armée Celtique en Italie Vexée,
De toutes par conflict & grande perre :
Romains fuis, ô Gaule repoulsée,
Pres du Thesin, Rubicon pugne incerte.

Celtic army vexed in Italy,
On all sides conflict and great loss:
Romans repulsed, O Gaul repelled
Near the Thesin, Rubicon uncertain battle.

Ambiguous

The Celts were a vast people. The Gauls of France and northern Italy were a Celtic people. So were the Britons of pre-Anglo-Saxon England. I believe that the people of the Iberian Peninsula were originally Celtic as well. Today’s Scots and Irish are as pure blooded celts as you can get. This said, many wars could be used to explain this.

My own feeling is that this refers to one of the later battles in the final war between Henri II of France and Felipe of Spain. Henri was an ally of the Roman Pontiff at that time, but the forces of the Spaniard Alba were supreme.

It all depends on the battles near the Rubicon River, a small river on the east coast of Italy that drains into the Adriatic, and the Thesin, a larger river that drains into the Po River.

Quatrain 73

Au lac Fucin de Penac le rivaige,
Prins du Leman au port de Orguion :
Nay le trois bras predict belliq image,
Par trois couronnes au grand Endymoin.

By Lake Fucino by the Benacle shore,
Near the Leman, at the Port of the Orguion:
Born with three arms predicting the warlike image,
Through three crowns to the great Endymion.

Ambiguous

Obviously the one born of three arms is not a person, instead it has to refer to a country. The three crowns supports this claim. Leman is Lake Leman, known now as Lake Geneva. Lake Fucino was a large lake in central Italy that was drained in 1875.

Almost certainly this quatrain has occurred before 1875. But just what is this refers to is beyond my understanding.

Quatrain 74

De Sens d’Autun viendront jusques au Rosne,
Pour passer outre vers les monts Pyranées :
La gent sortir de la Marque d’Anconne,
Par terre & mer suivra à grans trainées.

From Sens and Autun will come to the Rhone,
To pass besides towards the Pyrenees Mountains:
The people to go out of the Mark of Ancona,
By land and sea will follow in great trains.

Future

I know of no event in the past that explains this quatrain. This must be the future.

Quatrain 75

La voix ouye de l’insolit oyseau,
Sur le canon du respiral estaige :
Si haut viendra du froment le boisseau,
Que l’homme d’homme sera Antropophage.

The voice of the insolent bird is heard,
Upon the cannon of the highest story:
So high will the bushels of wheat rise,
That man of man will be a Man-eater.

Near Future

This quatrain has not yet occurred, yet the situation is rapidly developing for the fulfillment of the last two lines; one does not need to be a prophet in order to understand how this can apply. Our society is an oil-based society, everything from heating and food production to transportation depends on oil. Yet the amount of oil that we can recover for use is starting to diminish. With an increasing population, and a shrinking oil supply, the price of oil will rise so much that the price of everything that depends on it will climb to astronomical heights. This includes food, represented here by bushels of wheat, the basic staple of the west. At this time, with the price of bread out of the reach of so many people, people will be forced to eat the corpses of the dying and dead, simply to feed themselves.

The first two lines cannot be interpreted until the quatrain is fulfilled.

Quatrain 76

Foudre en Bourgoigne fera cas portenteux,
Que par engin ne pouroit faite,
De leur senat sacriste fair boiteux,
Sera sçavoir aux ennemis l’affaire.

Lightning in Burgundy will make portentous cases
Which could never have been done by art,
Of the Senate the sacred made lame,
Will be made known to the enemies of the affair.

Ambigous

That this had to have occurred after the death of Louis XVI is beyond a doubt. That is has to be a French Senate is also beyond a doubt, with the Burgundy center of the first line being apparent. That said, there are some questions. The primary one is – what or who is the sacred made lame and what connection does it or he have to a senate? Also, what acts did it or he do that became known to its enemies? Finally, what is the influence that Burgundy has in this?

As I see it there is only one possible candidate, if we are to declare the quatrain fulfilled. Talleyrand, a wounded ex-bishop of the Catholic Church, participated in the Estates General that quickly became the National Assembly. Abandoning his churchly garb, he supported France, in whatever government it had. It is possible that he fulfills this quatrain, but I cannot figure out the connections.

I am forced to leave this to the reader to interpret.

Quatrain 77

Par arcs feux poix & par feux repoussés,
Cris, hurlements sur la minute ouys :
Dedans sont mis par les rampars cassés
par cunicules les traditeurs fuis.

Repulsed by fiery archery, pitch and by fires,
Cries, howls heard at midnight:
Within they are place on the broken ramparts,
By the underground passages the traitors flee.

Ambiguous

Note on originals: The Bonhomme edition had the word feuz instead of feux, but the Du Rosne and Rigaud editions agree it is feux.

This looks like it was fulfilled. A city is betrayed to the enemy, but the inhabitants of the city drive them back after desperate fighting. The traitors flee using underground passageways.

Note, if the bows and pitch are descriptive of modern weaponry, then this will have to be the future, but as of now, I am certain it was fulfilled already.

Key will be the translation of the word feuz. Contrary to later copies, all five of the originals agree that this is the correct word.

Quatrain 78

Le grand Neptune du profond de la mer,
De gent Punique & fang Gauloys meslé :
Les isles à sang pour le tardif ramer,
Plus luy nuira que l’occult mal celé.

Great Neptune in the depth of the sea,
Of Punic race and Gallic blood mixed:
Isles blooded because they rowed too late,
And more harm from the badly concealed secret.

Disaster to the British Fleet

Neptune was the god who ruled the seas. Here, it has to refer to the British, who were the rulers of the seas for so very long. The isles definitely refer to Britain. Here, Nostradamus is warning the British that they will endure a major naval disaster. Their plans, barely concealed, and obvious to all, will be stopped cold. Their sailors will find their graves in the depths of the seas, it will do great harm to the British cause.

Quatrain 79

La barbe crespe & noire par engin,
Subjuguera la gent cruele & fiere :
Le grand Chyren ostera du longin,
Tous les captifs par Seline baniere.

The frizzled beard and black through skill,
Subjugates the people cruel and proud:
The great Chyren will remove from far away,
All those captured by the banner of Selin.

Future

Chyren is an obvious anagram. It’s root is that of Cheiron, or Chiron (spellings differ, both are acceptable), the centaur, who taught the sciences, especially medicine, of many of the ancient Greek heroes.

Most commentators interpret this to refer to the future Henri that it is said is supposed to be coming to save the whole world from the turmoil of the last anti-Christ. This anti-Christ is often identified with the Frizzled Beard. However, it could be that the frizzled beard is the Chyren of this quatrain. That would lead to a somewhat different interpretation, though still one that can only occur in the upcoming war.

The banner of Selin definitely points this to the future. Selin was one of the sultans of the Ottoman empire, yet he was not the most prominent or skilled of the sultans. He was also the Caliph, the successor of the prophet Muhammad. It is unlikely that someone will restore the empire of the Ottomans, but it is highly probable that someone will rise up to claim the Caliphate. That, depending on the policies pursued, can have either positive or negative connotations for the world. Judging from what Nostradamus writes, the connotations will be negative at best.

Quatrain 80

Apres conflict du lesé l’eloquence
Par peu de temps se tramme faint repos :
Point l’on n’admet les grands à deliverance,
Des ennemis sont remis à propos.

After conflict by the eloquence of the wounded one,
For too short a time there is rest:
They do not accept the great deliverance,
The enemies are delayed in war.

Beginning of the Cold War

The wounded one is Adolf Hitler, one of the most charismatic orators of all times. His eloquence was considered second to none during the twentieth century. He was wounded by his megalomania and his hatreds which defeated him. After his defeat, peace was achieved.

Unfortunately, while the peace was maintained, the rest that resulted lasted for an exceedingly short time. The two sides, the Soviets and the Anglo-Americans did not ultimately accept the deliverance the other enforced: the Soviets enforced a communist style deliverance whereas the Anglo-Americans enforced a democratic style deliverance. This was the root of the Cold War. By 1947 it was going full blast.
