The Second Century
Quatrains 91 - 100

Quatrain 91

Soleil levant un grand feu l’on verra,
Bruit & clarté vers Aquilon tendants :
Dedans le rond mort & cris l’on orra,
Par glaive, feu, faim, mort las attendants.

At the sun’s rising a great fire they will see,
Noise and clarity towards the North the wind
Inside the circle death and cries one will hear,
By double-edged swords, fire, famine, death awaiting them.

Future

The great fire sounds very much like a nuclear explosion. The north sounds like the forces of the North.

Note: This could have been fulfilled by Hiroshima and Nagasaki, with the North being the Soviet Union who attacked Japan between the dropping of the two bombs. The quatrain is fully explained by the events that ended the War in the Pacific. However, I think it is unlikely to be the true fulfillment of what Nostradamus saw. Keeping in mind that the main focus of the Quatrains is France and the Catholic Church, it is evident that France was not really involved in the War in the Pacific. Nostradamus wrote about Britain and the United States because of the interaction they have, often significantly, with France, and in a martial capacity. That said, it must be pointed out that Japan certainly has not had much interaction with the French, especially in a martial capacity. I therefore think that this quatrain is more in line with the future than with the past, and that the North are the fabled forces of the two nations of Aquilon (north) who are, according to the Epistle to Henri, “brothers yet not brothers,” who are destined to bring the future Islamic War to a close. However, we shall see.

Quatrain 92

Feu couleur d’or du ciel en terre veu,
Frappé du hault, nay, fait cas marveilleux :
Grand meurte mumain: prins du grâd la nepues,
Morts d’expectacles eschappé longuilleux.

Fire the color of gold in the sky on the earth is seen,
Hit from the heights, born, marvelous deed done:
Great human murder, prisoner of the great the nephew,
Spectacular death, the proud one escapes.

Future

Note: The Rigaud edition writes the third line as: Grand meurte mumain: prins du grâd nepues, Great human murder, prisoner of the great nephew. This, of course, can change the whole meaning of the quatrain. The first two lines are definitely indicative of a nuclear explosion. Beyond this, I can tell nothing except that we must wait for the future to fulfill this one.

Quatrain 93

Bien pres du Tymbre presse la Lybitine :
Un peu devant grand inundation :
La chef du nef prins, mis à sentine :
Chateau palais en conflagration.

Very near the Tiber, approaching the Libyan:
A little in front of the great inundation:
The chief of the ship imprisoned, put into the sink:
Chateau palace in conflagration.

Italian Campaign, World War II

The United Nations had landed in Sicily. Everything was going wrong for Il Duce. An invasion was expected. The Italians could not hold out. Before the advent of the invasion (the inundation), the King, Victor Emmanuel, summoned Mussolini and not only deprived him of his office but through some trickery got him imprisoned. But the Germans reacted; Mussolini was liberated and the Germans marched south. About the same time the United Nations landed in Italy and everything was burning.

Quatrain 94

GRAN. Pau grand mal pour Gaulois receura,
Vaine terreur au maritin Lyon :
Peuple infiny par la mer passera,
Sans eschapper un quart d’un milion.

GREAT Po, great evil by the Gauls recur,
Vain terror to the maritime Lion:
Infinite people by the sea passes,
Without a quarter of a million escaping.

North African Campaign, World War II

The Gauls here refer to not only the French, but also to the Italians. Ancient Gaul incorporated the Po river valley. Keep this in mind when understanding the interpretation.

The North African campaign began in May of 1940 when France fell and Italy joined the fight on the Axis side. The struggle between Irwin Rommel, the Desert Fox, and various British commanders was constantly supported by masses of troops and armor sent by sea that reinforced the conflict. Eventually, the British effort was augmented by sea-born landings along the North African coast by British and American troops. These landings were initially opposed by the French military, but due to a decision by Darlan, the French Admiral and the highest ranking Frenchman on the spot, the French quickly supported the “liberation.” Rommel, not supported and worn out by constant stress, was forced continuously on the defensive and eventually replaced. Problem for the Axis was, the successor, Von Arnim, did not have half the skill Rommel had. The United Nations closed in, their navies prevented German and Italian troops from fleeing. About a quarter of a million Axis personnel were captured at the end. Africa was redeemed.

Quatrain 95

Les lieux peuples seront inhabitables:
Pour champs avoir grande division :
regnes livrés à prudents incapables,
Lors les grands freres mort & dessention.

Places will be unfit for human habitation:
Great divisions over large fields:
Nations delivered to careful incapables,
For the great brothers, dissension and death.

Feud between the Lords of Aquilon?

Though commentators in the past have treated this as referring to past struggles, the descriptions of line 1 -3 are indicative of a future holocaust. Nuclear, chemical and biological warfare can render whole tracts of land uninhabitable. Of chief importance is the reference to the Great Brothers. In his Epistle to Henri of France II, Nostradamus calls the Lords of Aquilon (Lords of the north) brothers who are not brothers. This quatrain seems to go in that direction. The last line indicates a feud between the brothers. Could the upcoming holocaust be started by a feud between these two great nations, a feud they will have to put aside if they are to survive, let alone win the upcoming horrendous struggle?`

Quatrain 96

Flambeau ardent au ciel foir fera veu,
Pres de la fin & principle du Rosne :
Famine, glaiue:tard secours pourveau,
La Perse tourne envahir Macedoine.

Burning torchs will be seen in the sky at night
Near the end and beginning of the Rhone:
Famine, steel: the relief arrives too late,
The Persian turns to invade Macedonia.

Future Disaster, War of Armageddon

Keeping in mind Nostradamus’s dictate that each of his quatrains deals with either a single time, a single place or a single event, it is evident that we are dealing with two events in two different places, therefore, they have to occur at the same time.

The first event concerns the Rhone River, which is in Southern France. From end to end of the region, rockets (burning torches) will be seen in the sky. In a way, a rocket does look like a torch, just upside down, with the fire powering the rocket. The relief of this attack arrives too late.

The second event concerns a Persian leader, who turns and invades Macedonia, which today is split between includes Greece and Bulgaria.

Both events will occur about the same time.

Quatrain 97

Romain Pontife garde de t’approcher
De la cité qui deux fleuves arrouse,
Ton sang viendras aupres de la cracher,
Toy & les tiens quand fleuira la rose.

Roman Pontiff guard your approach
To the city which two rivers flow through,
Your blood will come to spit it out,
You and yours when the rose blooms.

Ambiguous

The Roses bloom in late spring early summer, although modern roses that are descended from Chinese Roses can bloom up to early fall. This was only started in the early 1880’s, after the Napoléonic Wars were ended.

The only assassination attempt on a Pontiff that I know of occurred in 1981. However, Pope John Paul II was in Vatican City at the time, well away from any city where two rivers met or flowed through. There was the death of Pius VI, he died in Valence, which is near where the Isere River flows into the Rhone. He died on the 29th of August, towards the end of the time when roses bloom, soo it could be him. However, I do not know how he died, I do not know about any blood being “spit out.”

I must leave this to the reader.

Quatrain 98

Celuy du sang resperse le visaige,
De la victime proche sacrifice :
Tonant en Leo augure par presaiges :
Mis estre à mort lors pour la fiancée.

The one whose visage shall be bloody,
Of the victim nearly sacrificed:
Noise in Leo augures by the presages:
Put to death for his fiancé.

Ambiguous

This is talking about someone who face is either literally or metaphorically bloody because of someone who was nearly executed. This person will be put to death because of his betrothed.

Note: Most commentators translate Tonant as Jupiter. I found it means noise, so have used that translation. That said, the other commentators are probably correct. Jupiter in Leo makes more sense than Noise in Leo. Still, noise could refer to another planet, like Mars, or a multitude of planets.

Quatrain 99

Terroir Romain qu’interpretoit augure,
Par gent Gauloyse sera par trop vexée :
Mais nation Celtique craindra l’heure,
Boreas, classe trop loing l’avoir poussee.

Roman territory, who will interpret the augury,
Will be too much vexed by the Gaulic people:
But the Celtic nation will fear the hour,
North-Wind, having driven the army in too far.

Napoléonic France

The Gaulic people are the French. The Roman territory is the area around Rome, in this case, the Papal States. During the Napoléonic Wars, the Papal States were subjugated to the will of Napoléon as both Popes Pius VI and Pius VII were captured and imprisoned. This is the key to understanding the quatrain.

But it was in Russia that the French nation found its end. Normally classe is Nostradamus word for fleet; we know this from Theophilus de Garenciéres. In this case, it has a different meaning. A land fleet instead of a sea going fleet. Napoléon had read about the campaign of Karl XII of Sweeden in Russia, he had learned about the problems that the Russian weather produced. He had built a huge fleet of carts, gigantic in size even by today’s standards, in oder to carry supplies while he was in Russia. It proved to be insufficient to the task. The grand army of over 500,000 perished almost to a man in the frozen waste of Russia, only approximately 30,000 survived.

Quatrain 100

Dedans les isles si horrible tumulte,
Rien on n’orra qu’une bellique brigue :
Tant grand sera des predateurs l’insulte,
Qu’on viendra ranger à grand ligue.

Within the isles is a horrible tumult,
One will hear only cries of war,
So great will be the insult of the predators
That they will come to be joined in the great league.

Britain against the Axis, the foundation of the United Nations

The tumult is the Second World War. After France had capitulated, Britain, the isles, stood alone against the Nazi onslaught. The predators, the three primary nations of the Axis Alliance, Germany, Italy and Japan were carving up the world between them. But the predators, the Axis, tried to bite off more than they could chew. Germany took on the Soviet Union, while Japan attacked the United States. Both nations joined Britain in the war against the Axis, forming the great military alliance the great league known as the United Nations.
