The Tenth Century
Quatrains 71 - 80

Quatrain 71

La terre & l’air gelleront si grand eau,
Lors qu’on viendra pour jeudi venerer,
Ce qui sera jamais ne feur si beau,
Des quarre pars le viendront honorer.

The earth and the air will freeze a great water,
When they will come to venerate Thursday,
That which will be never was it so good,
From the four parts will come to honor it.

United States & Thanksgiving Day?

The only part that concerns me about this is the part about the water freezing. That said, the sea referred to could be the Arctic sea, which for most of the 20th century froze during the winter months. If so, than this would have to refer to Thanksgiving Day in the United States. When it was established, it was a day in which the nation would give thanks to God for all the good he has given them. This would be very agreeable to the very religious Nostradamus. And the day always falls on a Thursday towards the end of November, a day the “sea is frozen.”

Quatrain 72

L’an mil neuf cent nonante neuf sept mois
Du ceil viendra un grand Roy deffraieur,
Resusciter le grand Roy d’Angolmois.
Avant apres Mars regner par bon heur.

The year nine hundred ninety nine seven months
From the sky comes the great king of terror
Resurrecting the great king of the Angolmois
Before, after Mars reigns a good time.

Avoided, or not yet understood?

It is rare that Nostradamus makes a definite prediction that does not seem to come about. The timing of the quatrain is specific. The year is 1999. The month, the seventh. July of 1999 (Nostradamus leaves out the millennium notation.)

People have stated that this was the timing of the event. But this does not necessarily have to be. I recall to mind a prophecy I once read of, a prophecy that indicated that in the year 1162, terror and destruction would destroy the Middle East. After that year was over, people were laughing at the prophet, ignoring him and consigning his work to the dustbin of history. Yet one hundred years later, people were looking at his prophecy with grim understanding. You see, 1162 was the of the birth of Genghis Khan.

Nostradamus does not say that the terror starts in 1999, only that the king of terror comes in 1999. This is in all likelihood a birth year quatrain, predicting what he will do. The only question is, by the Gregorian or the Julian calendar?

Now, we have to deal with the second line.

Line 2, Nostradamus wrote Roy deffraieur. The standard translation is King of Terror. I agree with this interpretation. But there was another, one that does not violate this interpretation but gives meaning to it. Peter Lemesurier, in his work Nostradamus the Next 50 Years claims that this is the Defraying King. This king would defray accounts. There may be some truth to that, but it does not render inaccurate the King of Terror interpretation.

To explain this, think of this bit of history. For years, France fought its wars on German soil. The Thirty Years war, the War of the Spanish Succession, the Napoléonic Wars, among others, were fought on German soil. Germany was the battleground for great wars. But in 1870, Bismark, the Chancelor of Prussia, engaged in a bit of defraying when he launched the Franco-Prussian war. The war was concluded by the first Versailles treaty, signed 1871.

The annexation of the Alsace-Lorraine regions, plus the large indemnity France had to pay to the new German Empire in the Versailles Treaty made France very angry. As a result, when the opportunity came, France was very willing to take up its own bit of defraying, and in 1918, the second Versailles Treaty was signed, in which Germany gave up the Alsace-Lorraine region, accepted a huge reduction in its military force, and forced Germany to pay an indemnity to France.

The Second Versailles treaty was so unpopular in Germany that they allowed Adolf Hitler to rise to power. He rebuilt Germany and launched yet another war to defray accounts. This resulted in the third Versailles Treaty in which Alsace-Lorraine changed hands again, France was forced to be occupied and pay for it.

With this historical situation in mind, it is evident that Europe owes a great debt to the Asian countries. It has occupied and controlled the Middle East, India, Southeast Asia and China. It has made a profit on Opium in China and the Middle East, spices and other items from India, lumber and gems from Southeast Asia, to name a few. European colonial efforts in Asia are still hated today. An account will be defrayed. But by whom? And why should it be by a nice person? Evidence indicates it will be by one who is worse than Hitler was.

The third line is also interesting. Nostradamus writes: Roy d’Angolmois. King of the Angolmois. This is normally interpreted to be King of the Mongols. But I once read of an alternate interpretation, one lost to me unfortunately, that retranslated it as King of the Angoumois. Now, the Angoumois were a people in Western France. If true, that could mean that the third line refers to the restoration of the Capetian Bourbon dynasty.

Finally, the last line. Mars, here, is quite obvious. Mars was the Lord of War. But Mars could not reign if war was not occurring. Therefore, war is occurring on a large scale before and after, as it was during 1999. While peace still reigns in much of Europe, it is evident that war has returned to the Balkan states, the Black Sea area and the Middle East.

Quatrain 73

Le temps present avecques le passé
Sera jugé par grand Jovialiste,
Le monde tard luy sera laissé,
Et desloial par le clergé juriste.

The times present and the past
Will be judged by the great Jovialist,
The world too late he will be left,
And disloyal by the jurist ministry.

Future

That this refers to the future is beyond a doubt. But just what it means is beyond even my ability to figure out. This is a quatrain that has to be fulfilled before we can understand it.

Quatrain 74

Au revolu du grand nombre septiesme
Apparoistra au temps jeux d’Hecatombe,
Non esloigné du grand aage milliesme,
Que les entres sortiront de leur tombe.

In the revolution of the great number seven,
Appearing in the time of the Hecatombe games,
Not far from the great millennial time,
That the dead will come out of their graves.

About to Happen?

The millennial time was the year 2000/2001. The Hecatombe is a catastrophy or disaster, with numerous victims and great losses. Though what this has to do with games is beyond me, yet that is what Nostradamus wrote.

This sounds like some earth shaking event that completely upends the whole world. The fact that there are people doing games with war and destruction on massive scale indicates that warlords are running rampant throughout the world.

The timing is given in the first three lines. But the key is the first line. The revolution of the great number 7. Until that happens, we are quite safe. Once it happens though....

Quatrain 75

Tant attendu ne reujendra jamais
Dedans l’Europe, en Asie apparoistra
Un de la ligue yssu du grand Hermes,
Et sur tout roys de orientz croistra.

Long awaited he will never return
Inside Europe, in Asia appears
One of the league issued from the great Hermes,
And will grow over the oriental kings.

Anti-Christ?

This quatrain sounds like our much anticipated Anti-Christ. Please remember that to Nostradamus, the orient started in the Middle East. The Arab world was oriental, i.e. eastern.

If this ties in with the other quatrains, this refers to a hypocritical Muslim leader who achieves dominance over the other rulers in the Middle East. The mention about the issue from the great Hermes indicates that he will be a supreme orator. He will hold the Islamic world spellbound on the strength of his oratory, much as Hitler held the German people on the strength of his own oratory.

We can already see how this can happen in the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). And the one who is calling himself the Caliph is not a very charismatic individual, though he is relatively strong in what Nostradamus would call “Muhammadan Law.”

Quatrain 76

Le grand senat discernera la pompe,
A l’un qu’apres sera vaincu chassé,
Ses adherans seront à son de trompe,
Biens publiez ennemys deschasse.

The great senate will notice the pomp,
Of the one that later will be conquered, expelled,
His adherents will be the sound of the trumpet,
Means public the enemy is chased.

Napoléon Bonaparte, the Hundred Days

The great senate is the Congress of Vienna. The pomp was the celebration in France that heralded the return of Napoléon Bonaparte, he who would be expelled after he was defeated at Waterloo. The adherents to Napoléon followed the sound of the bugle, the military trumpet. Napoléon would launch his war, trying to get his strikes in first. Several battles were fought, culminating at the epic battle of Waterloo. Napoléon was supported by the French during the hundred days, but after Waterloo, he was chased from the field and, eventually, chassed out of France by the French.

Quatrain 77

Trente adherans de l’ordre des quyretres
Bannys leurs biens donnez ses adversaires,
Tous leurs bien fais seront pour desmerites
Classe espargie delivrez aux corsaires.

Thirty adherents of the order of Quyretres
Exiled, their property given to the adversaries,
All their good acts will be to their demerit
Fleet scattered, delivered to the corsairs.

Ambiguous

While the corsair was a ship of the Barbary Pirates, it is unlikely that this is a quatrain that deals with the times before the pirates were destroyed. Then again, I could be wrong. While I suspect this refers to the future, I am uncertain. Also, the order of Quyretres, what is it? Quyretres, (Quiretres in the Sève edition) is a word deliberately modified to rhyme with desmerites on line 3. I therefore leave this to the reader to decipher.

Quatrain 78

Subite joye en subite tristesse,
Sera à Romme aux graces embrassees
Dueil, cris, pleurs, larm, sang excellant liesse
Contraires bandes surprinses & troussees.

Sudden joy in sudden sadness,
Will belong to Rome in the graces embraced
Mourning, shouting, weeping, tears, blood excelling jubilation
The opposite band surprised and captured.

Conquest of Rome, 1870

This quatrain deals with Rome. The year is 1870. Italians all over the nation wanted Rome to be the capital of the new nation. The only ones who were opposed to this idea were the Papacy and the churchmen. But it did not stop Victor Emmanuel II, who had waited patiently for a number of years. He only dared not attack Rome because French troops guarded the Papal court.

The occasion of the Franco-Prussian War gave Victor Emmanuel his opportunity. As soon as he knew the French troops were withdrawing to France, he struck. The fighting was brief and soon over, the number of casualties were minor, most of the papal forces were captured.

There was great rejoicing throughout Italy. Most Italians considered the conquest to be the completion of their long cherished dream. There was only one problem – the papacy hated the conquest. Declaring themselves to be prisoners in Rome, none of the popes would have anything to do with the Italian government. So, while most Italians rejoiced, the clergy mourned.

Quatrain 79

Les vieux chemins feront tous embelys,
Lon passera à Memphis somentrée,
Le grand Mercure d’Hercules fleur de lys
Faisant trembler terre, mer & contrée.

The old roads will be improved,
They will pass to submissive Memphis,
The great Mercury of Hercules fleur-de-lis
Making tremble land, sea and country.

Future

Note on original: Somentrée is obviously altered to rhyme with contrée on line 4. So the trick is to find the original. After some research, I have selected soumettre, which means to submit.

The mark of Hercules made me look at the Duke of Marlborough, but it is evident that this Hercules is tied to the fleur-de-lis, not opposed to it. Mercury was the messenger of the gods, the great communicator. Does it tie to the Ogmios quatrains? I have a suspicion it does.

Quatrain 80

Au regne grand du grand regne regnant,
Par force d’armes les grands porres d’arain
Fera ouvrir le roy & duc joignant
Port demoly nef à fons, jour serain.

In the great reign of the great reigning reign,
Through force of arms the great gates of brass
The king and the reaching duke will open,
Port demolished nave at the bottom, serene day.

Ambiguous

A nave is a part of the church. Traditional translation of nef have translated it into navy, not neve. I list it here because the traditional translation and interpretation may be correct, though I doubt it.

It seems to refer to a time when the Catholic Church will be declining rapidly in influence.
