Quatrains 11 - 20

Quatrain 11

Peuple infiny paroistra à Vicence
Sans force feu brusler la Basilique
Pres de Lunage deffait grand de Valence,
Lors que Venise par mort prendra pique.

People infinite will appear in Vicence
Without force will burn the Basilisk
Not far from Lunage the great of Valence defeated,
When Venice by death will take the pike.

Ambiguous

Vicence and Venice are in Italy. There are three Valence’s in France, nowhere else does any Valence exist. But try as I might, I cannot find any place called Lunage. However, I have found several people called Lunage. Therefore, it is either a place that no longer exists, a place that does not yet exist or it is an anagram; which, I am not certain. The Basilisk was a legendary animal whose gaze could turn people to stone. My first thoughts were that it was an anagram for the Bastille, but the Italian flavor of the quatrain discounts this possibility. I am forced to leave this to the reader or the future to interpret.

Quatrain 12

Apparoistra aupres de Buffalore
L’hault & procete entré dedans Milan
L’abbe de Foix avec ceux de saint Morre
Feront la forbe abillez en vilan.

Appearing near Buffalora,
The high and tall one enters into Milan,
The Abbey of Foix with those of Saint Maure
Will make the trumpery being dressed as rascals.

Ambiguous

Villa Buffalora, the only Buffalora I was able to find, is located in the eastern part of the Lombardy region of Italy. Milan is, of course, the capital of the Lombardy region. Foix is located along the southern border of France, near the Pyrenees Mountains. There is no Saint Maure, but there is a Maure-de-Bretagne, in Brittany. This sounds like a quatrain where two events occur at the same time, the first two lines referring to an Italian event, the last two lines referring to a French event.

Quatrain 13

Le croisé frere par amour effrenee
Fera par Praytus Bellerophon mourir,
Classe à mil ans la femme forcenee,
Beu le breuvage, tous deux apres perir.

The crusading brother through impassioned love
Will cause by Praytus Bellerophon to die,
The fleet a thousand years, the woman compelled,
The beverage drunk, both later disappear.

Ambiguous

In Greek mythology, Bellerophon was the ancient hero who slew the fearsome chimera. Praytus was translated as Proetus by several sources, but I have my doubts as to the accuracy of this. The two words combined seems to indicate that someone named Praytus kill someone who will have the heroic characteristics of Bellerophon. The instigator seems to be a brother who loves someone, likely the woman of the third line. I cannot be certain, but it seems that the man and woman disappear to close out the quatrain. The drink is probably the drink of poisonous lust or grief, or it could be a literal drink. Just what the fleet and the thousand years are I have no idea.

Quatrain 14

Le grand credit d’or d’argent l’abondance
Fera aveugler par libide l’honneur
Sera cogneu d’adultere l’offence,
Qui parviendra à son grand deshonneur.

The great credit, the abundance of gold and silver
Will blind honor with lust
The offense of the adulterer will be known,
Which will bring him great dishonor.

Future or Recently Fulfilled?

The first line, the abundance of money, is causing many otherwise honorable people to be blinded by greed and selfishness. This attitude places this in a very modern context, where more people have more money than at any time in history. As Nostradamus clearly observed, everybody is more and more into a “give me” attitude. That said, the last two lines have not yet been fulfilled. Though this is likely the future, it is possible this has already been fulfilled.

Some people will claim that this refers to the Lewinski affair, which occurred during the Presidency of William Clinton. While it is certainly possible, I must point out that I have my doubts. While the first two lines clearly mark this quatrain as the present times and the last two lines make the quatrain a generalized quatrain, in other words, a quatrain of the present time that can have many fulfillments, I strongly suspect that this refers to a French President or Prime Minister. However, not being as familiar with modern French politics as I would like to be, I cannot make any claim one way or the other.

Quatrain 15

Vers Aquilon grands efforts par hommasse
Presque l'Europe & l'univers vexer,
Les deux eclipse mettra en tel chasse,
Et aux Pannons vie & mort renforcer.

Towards the North great efforts by mannish ones.
Almost all Europe and the world to be offended,
The two eclipses will be put into such a hunt
And in Hungary life and death will be reinforced.

World War II, Eastern Front

The actions of the two eclipses, Nazi Germany and Communist Soviet Union, made it possible for the Second World War to commence. The rest of Europe, and the whole world, was offended when Poland was partitioned by the two powers. They were further offended when Germany attacked Denmark and Norway, and the Soviet Union attacked Finland and Romania.

When the two nations turned against each other and the full fury of the Second World War erupted in the Eastern Front, the hunt was on. The Germans continued the offending of the world by the murder of tens of thousands of Russians, the deportation of the Jews from the conquered lands to the death camps, and the complete revocation of the Geneva Convention during that war. The term mannish ones (hommassee) is here a veiled reference to the so-called perfection of mankind and maleness that the Nazis preached only the Germanic peoples had.

True to form, the Soviets displayed an equal audacity in offending the world when they stopped their advance just outside of Warsaw so the Germans could annihilate any opposition there, imposed Communist rule in Poland, East Germany, and the rest of Central Europe, and then tried to communize Greece and Berlin as well. Hungary was just one of the countries caught up in the terrible struggle, for them life and death was a very real issue.

For those who have doubts as to the accuracy of this quatrain, mainly because of the reference to the north, please note that Nostradamus considered Russia (the predecessor and successor to the Soviet Union), Germany, Poland and Scandinavia to be the north. In the first century, Nostradamus wrote a quatrain about the War of 1700 which involved these very nations.

Quatrain 16

Au lieu que HIERON feit sa nef fabriquer,
Si grand deluge sera & si subite,
Qu'on n'aura lieu ne terres s'atacquer
L'onde monter Fesulan Olympique.

Rather than HIERON feit her nave to fabricate,
Will be such a great deluge and so sudden,
That they will be neither land or place to save them
The wave to take up Fesulan Olympia.

Future

The key is found in the anagram Hieron. Some commentators seem to think it refers to the Catholic Church, making the place where the ship was built being Rome. However, Theophilus de Garenciéres seems to feel it refers to Jason, making the place where the ship was built being Iolcos, which was located in Greece.

Just where the Fesulan Olympia is, I have no idea.

Quatrain 17

Les bien aisez subit seront desmis
Par les trois freres le monde mis en trouble,
Cité marine saisiront ennemis,
Faim, feu, sang, peste, & de to’maux le double.

The good ease will be subject to being dislocated
By the three brothers the world put in confusion,
Marine city will grab enemies,
Hunger, fire, blood, plague, and to “double the wrong”.

French Revolutionary/Napoléonic Wars

The three brothers appear in the Epistle to Henri. They are the 1) the government of the Assembly 2) the Directory and 3) the Consulate and Empire of Napoléon. From the beginning of the French Revolution till the downfall of Napoléon, war consumed France. The marine city is ambiguous, it could be Toulouse or London, both marine cities. The last line obviously refers to the furious And true to the second line, nations even far from the furious conflict, like the United States, were put into confusion due to the conflict.

Quatrain 18

De Flora issue de sa mort sera cause,
Un temps devant par jeune & vieille bueira,
Par les trois lys luis feront telle pause,
Par son fruit sauve comme chair crue mueire.

The flower's issue will cause its death,
A time before by young and old drunk,
By the three lilies they will make such a great pause.
By its fruit saved as crude dead flesh.

Post Napoléonic Bourbon Revival

The flower is the fleur-de-lys, the flower of lily , the symbol of the Bourbon monarchy. The three lilies are the last three Bourbons to rule France. Louis XVIII, Charles X (of the direct line of Bourbon) and Louis Philippe (from a cadet branch, the Orleanist line of Bourbon). Nostradamus here claims that their own actions caused the downfall of the monarchy in France. History has proved Nostradamus was correct!

Quatrain 19

A soubs tenir la grand cappe troublee,
Pour l’esclaicir les rouges marcheront,
De mort familee sera presque accablce
Les rouges rouges le rouge assomeront.

With support the Grand Capet flustered
The reds move to clarify it
The family will almost be scourged by death,
The red ones killed by the red red ones.

French Revolution

Louis XIV, Marie Antoinette, and their children were the primary members of the House of Capet. Line 1 is nonsensical if you take the house being supported. But if the flustering of the house was supported, then it makes perfect sense. The family of Louis was balked every way they tried to move. The revolutionaries moved against the family of the king. During the beginning of the reign of terror, the family was almost exterminated. But the actions of the revolutionaries turned against themselves with the more mild Girodians eventually executed by the most radical Jacobites, who were themselves executed in the end.

Quatrain 20

Le faux messaige par election fainte
Courir par urben, rompue pache arreste,
Voix acheptees, de sang chapelle tainte,
Et à un autre l’empire contracte.

False message by a rigged election
Run by urban, broken pact stopped,
Voice bought, chapel tainted with blood,
And in one another the empire contracts.

Ambiguous

Urban could mean a city or a pope of that name. However, the last pope Urban was in 1623-1644, and as far as I know, he ran no elections. This sounds like a modern day election. The most likely is the German election of August 1934, which were as rigged as they could be. The Nazis were the only party in Germany, they had control of the military and the police, they asked the electorate to approve certain changes that allowed all power to be officially transferred to Hitler. Approximately 85% of the electorate approved. However, the last line is curious.
