The Eighth Century
Quatrains 61 - 70

Quatrain 61

Jamais par le descouvrement du jour
Ne parviendra au signe sceptrifere
Que tous ses sieges ne soient en sejour,
Portant du coq don du TAG amifere.

Never by the revelation of day
Will attain the sign of the scepter bearer
That all his sieges is in to the day,
Carrying to the Cock the donation of the TAG army.

Future

Though this has to refer to the future, the fact that Nostradamus capitalized the word TAG marks this quatrain as being of great importance. The key is to determine the meaning. Is it a shortened version of the name or title? A reversal of the actual spelling, GAT, may refer to a name like Gates. Only the future will tell.

Quatrain 62

Lors qu’on verra expiler le saint temple,
Plus grand du rosne leurs sacrez prophaner
Par eux naistra pestilence si ample,
Roy fuit injuste ne sera condamner.

When one will see the holy temple spoiled,
The great of the Rhône will profane the sacred
By them so ample a pestilence will be born,
The unjust king will not condemn.

The Committee of Public Safety

The first line places the quatrain in Revolutionary France. The great of the Rhône has to be the Jacobites in Revolutionary France. During their short reign, they closed and despoiled all of the Christian churches in France. The pestilence is the Cult of Reason, which never died. The cult never accepted any deity, in fact it tried to reject deity. This would be a pestilence of the soul, according to Nostradamus. The unjust king is either Maximilian Robespierre or (later on) Napoléon Bonaparte, take your pick.

Quatrain 63

Quant l’adultere blessé sans coup aura
Meurdry la femme & le filz par despit,
Femme assoumee l’enfant estranglera,
Huit captifz prins, s’estouffer sans respit.

When the adulterer is hurt without a blow
Murdered the woman and son out of spite,
The woman knocked down, the child strangled
Eight captives taken, choked without respite.

Ambiguous

Unfortunately, the first three lines is common enough: an adulterer is presented with a love child and in a rage erupts against his mistress and the child, both the woman and the child are killed. However, this is going to be something that happens to a very important person, most likely in France. The key will be the fourth line. I have no idea who the eight captives are who are choked to death but they will be the key to the quatrain.

Quatrain 64

Dedans les Isles les enfans transportez,
Les deux de sept seront en desespoir,
Ceux du terrouer en seront supportez,
Nom pelle prins des ligues fuy l’espoir.

In the islands the children transposed,
The two of seven will be in despair,
Those on the ground will be supported there,
Title shovel prisoners hope of the league falters.

World War II

Though I cannot completely analyze this quatrain, the last line being beyond my ability to figure out, the first three lines are so obviously referring to the children and the suffering in Britain during the Second World War that it is a foregone conclusion. During the early days of the war, as it became obvious that the battle of the air would be decisive, the British government of Winston Churchill ordered the children in the more vulnerable cities, like London, to be evacuated towards the country. The third line obviously refers to the civilian population, supported by their government, even in the tubes during massive air assaults. The last line is, of course, hard to interpret. Interpreting it correctly will depend on the first three words: Nom pelle prins. Nom could be name, title or appellation. Pelle has only one interpretation, shovel, which could refer to the underground transportation system that London had during those days. Prins could be prisoners, or something else. Regardless, hope of the league falters refers to any and all respect for the League of Nations which was virtually destroyed by the onslaught of the Second World War.

Quatrain 65

Le vieux frustré du principal espoir,
Il parviendra au chef de son empire :
Vingt mois tiendra le regne à grand pouroir,
Tiran, cruel en delaissant un pire.

The old frustrated in the principle hope,
Will attain to the leadership of his empire:
Twenty months will hold the reign with great power,
Tyrannical, cruel and leaving one worse.

Philippe Pétain

Philippe Pétain was the leader of France from June of 1940 to April of 1942. His first government was, however, effectively a non-government, concerned more with the surrender and the movement. So the effective Pétain government starts with the Second government of July 12th. The key to this is that on July 10th, the French Chamber of Deputies and Senate voted the Third Republic out of existence by agreeing to give full power to Pétain to form a new constitution.

Between July 12th 1940 and April 18th 1942, a period of just over 21 months, Petain was the true leader of Vichy France. France kept its overseas empire, though Japan took over Indochina and Hitler controlled the Atlantic Coast of France. Still, in the Vichy controlled regions and in the colonies, Hitler respected Petain.

Pétain was an obvious collaborationist. He agreed with the Nazis in many areas, including a hatred of democracy and democratic/republican institutions. He also had a hatred of Jewishness, like the Nazis did. He collaborated with Hitler on a number of issues. His only redeeming trait was that he strongly desired to keep France out of the war, which he succeeded in for approximately twenty months.

July 18, 1942, Petain was retained as the President of France, but the Nazis, now the actual leaders of all of France, changed the “official” government so that Petain was nothing more than a figurehead. Laval, who was worse than Petain, became the government. Laval would have brought France into the war against Britain if he had been in power in early 1940, he only did not because he was not in the government during the critical time and after he joined Britain had already transformed the war by winning the Battle of Britain. Still, he could have moved to get France to join the Axis in 1943 after he was made the official leader of France. Why he did not at this time is unknown, but he may have realized, even then, that the Axis were doomed. Nevertheless, this did not stop Lavel from forming and becoming the head of a very powerful paramilitary force, the Milice, which gave full cooperation to the Gestapo in the rounding up of Jews and enemies of Germany.

Quatrain 66

Quand l’escriture D.M. trouvee,
Et cave antique à lampe descouverte,
Loy, Roy, & Prince ulpian espouvee,
Pavillon Royne & Duc sous la couverte.

When the inscription D.M. is found,
In the ancient cave revealed by a lamp
Law, King and Prince Ulpian tried,
The Queen and Duke in the pavilion under cover.

Future?

Ulpian was a jurist of the Roman Empire who is reputed to have written a number of books, treatises and monographs, all dealing with jurisprudence and criminal justice. A number of statements were attributed to him, some of which display a surprising and advanced (even by our days) understanding of the purpose of justice and others which display a very practical ability to observe. Nostradamus’ statement about Prince Ulpian is a statement about a prince who, at the very least, is an expert in law and observation.

Many interpretations have been given for D.M. It could stand for Deus Mihi (God in Me) as some have suggested. However, it could stand for something else. The feel of the quatrain seems to indicate the tomb of an ancient Roman.

Quatrain 67

PAR CAR NERSAF, à ruine grand discorde,
Ne l’un ne l’autre n’aura election,
Nersaf du peuple aura amour & concorde,
Ferrare, Collonne grande protection.

PAR CAR NERSAF, in ruin the great discord,
Not the one nor the other will have the election,
Nersaf of the people will have love and concord,
Ferrara, Colonna great protection.

Ambiguous

If we do the same thing we did in the first quatrain of this century, and switch the first and second words, we get Carparnersaf. This could be phonetically similar to a name of the future, though whose name I have no idea. Nersaf is repeated on the third line, strongly indicating it is the same person. Ferrara and Colonna are both in Italy, Colonna itself is near Rome.

Quatrain 68

Vieux Cardinal par le jeusne deceu,
Hors de sa charge se verra desarmé,
Arles ne monstres double soit apetecu,
Et Liqueduct & le Prince embausmé.

Old Cardinal by the young person deceived,
Out of his position will see himself disarmed,
Arles show not the double is perceived,
And Liquiduct and the Prince embalmed.

Ambiguous

Arles is in France, so this is most likely a French quatrain. The old cardinal is most likely a cardinal of some power. My thoughts turn to Richelieu and Mazarin, both powerful prime ministers of France and cardinals of the Catholic Church. The key is the translation of Liquiduct.

This has been seen by many commentators as referring to Richelieu in the last days of his life. He had found a young noble, Cinq-Mars, who became the lover of King Louis XIII. Cinq-Mars however played a very dangerous game. He got Richelieu metaphorically removed from power. Richelieu was in despair when he received a note from Arles detailing a treasonous agreement between Cinq-Mars and Spain. Of course, the agreement was presented to Louis who immediately had Cinq-Mars arrested. Cinq-Mars was executed, but Richelieu and Louis were both dead within a year.

If this is the true translation, then Liquiduct has to refer to Richelieu. However, I am not convinced.

Quatrain 69

Aupres du jeune le vieux ange baisser,
Et se viendra surmonter à la fin :
Dix ans esgaux aux plus vieux rabaisser,
De trois deux l’un l’huitiesme seraphin.

To the young person the old angel to go down,
And will come to overcome at the end:
Ten years equal for the oldest to belittle,
Of three two the one the eighth seraphim.

Ambiguous

That these are not literal angels is beyond a doubt. Instead, this is representing qualities of angels. However the last line is curious. None of the seraphim in the bible are named, they exist only to sing worship to God Almighty. I wonder if Nostradamus confused the Seraphim with the Archangels, of whom there were a total of eight, with one, Lucifer (the eighth) who fell from grace, leaving seven to remain. I must admit, if he did confuse the Seraphim with the Archangels, then it was quite an error, because few who understood Catholicism like Nostradamus did would make such a mistake. That said, while it is extremely unlikely, it is not impossible.

Quatrain 70

Il entrera vilain, meschant, infame
Tyrannisant la Mesopotamie,
Tous amys fait d’adulterine d’ame,
Tertre horrible noir de phisonomie.

The villain will come, wicked, infamous
Tyrannizing the Mesopotamians,
He makes friends by an adulterous lady,
Knoll horrible black of aspect.

Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi & The Islamic State

The key to this quatrain is the fact that his aspect is black. This does not necessarily mean he wears black clothes, though he can, or that his skin is black (which is really brown), although it could be. It mean that his attitude is black, totally evil. He has no love, compassion or kindness within him. This can only refer to the Anti-Christ. Not even Adolf Hitler was this evil.

The adulterous lady is in this case a perversion of a government. The fact that it is in Mesopotamia strongly indicates a perversion of an Islamic government. It does not practice what it preaches, i.e. it is a hypocritical government. For instance, a so-called Christian government that practices murder and hatred, against the teachings of the Christ who taught God’s law of love. Considering the region, it is more likely, a so-called Islamic government that launches wars against other nations and practices greed and selfishness, all against the teachings of Mohammed who taught God’s law of peace and generosity, who refused war under any circumstances except when attacked first.

The Islamic State ably fits the conditions of this quatrain as the adulterous lady and Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the so-called Caliph, is the leader. He had already gone against Qu’oranic law by declaring that his state has to wage war against everyone until it controls the entire world. Black of aspect by his deeds, he also wears black. While he pays lip service to many of the tenants of Islam, his warring against everyone only further supports his aspect. Though he does not control all of Mesopotamia, he does control most of the traditional northern Mesopotamia, including parts of it that are nowadays located in Syria.

Much as I hate to admit it, as of the time this is written we are living during the fulfillment of one of the quatrains.
