En la frontiere de Caussade & Charlus,
Non guieres loing du fonds de la vallee, myrtée,
De ville France musicque à son de luths,
Environnez combouls & grand myttee.
Caussade and Carlus are tiny communes in southwest France.. The border is probably the border in the respective departments the two communes are in. Caussade is in the Tarn-et-Garonne department while Carlus is in the Tarn department. Ville Franche could be Villefranche, a common village name in France, though it could be any other village. Myttee translates most closely to myrtes, or myrtles; the myrtle was a tree dedicated to Venus, the goddess of love, hence the translation.
While it is unlikely that lutes will be the instrument used, it is very likely that guitars and violins will be used; these instruments are stringed instruments much like the lutes of old. It is true that Nostradamus would recognize that the instruments were not lutes, but not knowing the true name of the new instruments, or not wanting to name all of the instruments, he simply used lutes as expressive of the actual instruments that will be used.
Le regne humain d’Anglique geniture,
Fera son regne paix union tenir,
Captive guerre demy de sa closture,
Long temps la pais leur sera maintenir.
The descendants of the Angles are the English and their descendants. For a long time most of Europe was in the Pax Britanica; this started with the end of the Napoléonic Wars and ended with the advent of the First World War. After the Second World War was over, the Pax Americana started. The Americans, the people of the United States are also a people descended from the Angles, so the quatrain also refers to them.
Le trop bon temps trop de bonté royalle :
Fais & Deffais prompt subit negligence,
Legier croia faux d’espouse loyalle,
Luy mis à mort par sa venevolence.
Louis did have some redeeming characteristics, most notably a mildness of temper and a compassion that was rare for his age. Unfortunately, his mildness and compassion was not the qualities necessary to a king. Louis the IX of France, for, had saintly qualities that would normally indicate that one was not suited to be a king – Henry VI of England is a prime example of this – but he also had qualities of sagacity (or at least good luck to live in the times he did) and a core of iron that allowed him to rule France with a strong hand, he also lived in a more spiritual time when most people did not dare take up arms against a saintly person. Louis XVI had multiple marks against him, he did not have enough of the saintly characteristics of Louis IX, none of this sagacity, none of his iron, and the time he lived in was far different – it was a richer time, with greater material wealth, greater intellectual gifts and more leisure for the upper and middle classes than before – The times too good.
Unwilling to make firm stands, he did at least have the ability to choose excellent ministers. But he did not provide them with the support they needed to do their job – made and unmade negligence promptly subjected. Instead, he kept issuing promissory notes to pay for the royal expenses (too much royal bounty). He also refused to trust his Austrian born wife, Marie Antoinette, who at least had more sagacity than he did – which was proved during the days of the Revolution when she ended up making many of the decisions attributed to him. She was, in the end, loyal to him and their children when he was less than loyal to her – Fickle will be false to the royal spouse.
When all was said and done, Louis XVI lacked the one critical requirement he needed – the ability to be a king. He would show his mildness when he died forgiving his enemies, praying even as he was led up to the guillotine. In some ways, he preferred death. It gave him what he wanted towards the end of his life – heaven.
Par lors que un Roy sera contre les siens,
Natifs de Bloys subjuguera Ligures,
Mammel, Cordube, & les Dalmatiens,
Des sept puis l’óbre à Roy estrennes & lemeures.
The “natives of Blois” refers to France. It is interesting that Nostradamus uses the ancient place where French kings ruled France until Versailles was built by Louis XIV. But he also says not the one of Blois but the natives of Blois, the people of Blois. This can only refer to a time when the French people are the rulers, or at least attempting to rule.
Mammel is unknown, however there is a Mammola in southern Italy. Cordoba is in southern Spain while Dalmatia is modern day Croatia. Liguria is the costal region of northwest Italy, the city of Genoa is the traditional chief city of this region.
The most likely fulfillment of this occurred during the reign of Napoléon. He never reigned like the kings of old. Instead, he reigned in the name of the people and the laws of France.
At this time, France conquered the regions listed in lines 2 and 3. Liguria is the Italian coast. Cordoba is southern Spain. Dalmatia was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire which was defeated by the French. I do not know what Mammel is, though.
The last line was a reference to the turmoil that Napoléonic rule had. Peace was illusory, just like it was during the reign of the seven children of Henri II and Catherine de Medici. The gifts and the hobgoblins of the past revisited France during the rule of Napoléon. The Napoléonic wars were every bit as destructive to French manhood as the Religious wars during the rule of the seven were.
L’ombre du regne de Navarre non vray,
Fera la vie de fort illegitime :
La veu promis incertain de Cambray,
Roy Orleans dogra mur legitime.
Henri de Navarre was a great king who united the French nation and ended the Religious Wars. The shade, or ghost, of Navarre is here invoked, indicating a king who was meant to unify and bring peace to France. Yet as the last part of the first line indicates, the shade will not be true, meaning that the great hope will have little of Navarre’s greatness.
Cambrai is a commune in southern France. Here it refers to all of France.
This refers to the rise of the house of Bourbon-Orleans. The strong refers to Charles X, King of France. His policies lead to his being forced to abdicate the throne. His son also abdicated, leaving the throne to the grandson of Charles. However, Louis Philippe got the French Legislature to render the ascension illegitimate, fulfilling the second line.
Louis Philippe started out as a popular king, at least s popular s Henri IV was. However, Louis was only interested in power, not what he could do with the power. The similarity and the vow to France (Cambrai) was false. His reign ultimately legitimized the downfall of the monarchy.
Vie fort mort de L’OR vilsine indigne,
Sera de Saxe non nouveau electeur :
De Brunsuie mandra d’amour signe,
Faux le rendant au peuple seducteur.
Note on Translation: L’OR is definitely a key word in a key quatrain. . Here it has a literal translation: THE GOLD. Of course, it is not literal gold, but something that means gold, or is as good as gold. This is the key to understanding the quatrain.
Note on Interpretation: Gold is a precious metal, as opposed to baser metals. In the times of Nostradamus, it was considered the most precious of all metals. Used in this context, it has a special context that cannot be denied. But the only context that Nostradamus would consider so high would be a religious one. Therefore, we are talking about a religious context. That said, one more fact and deduction is obvious. To the very Catholic (and to any Christian) Nostradamus, the only real aim in life is life in Heaven. So, this quatrain is about one who is so unworthy that he or she is obviously unworthy of life in Heaven.
Hitler’s life was a sordid, hypocritical one. His death was just as sordid. Brunswick here stands for the entire German nation which professed its love of Adolf Hitler. Hitler, who really did not care much for anyone, took great pains to present the German common person, the Volk, as a truly upright and noble. This led him to seduce the entire nation, especially during the disaster of the great economic meltdown known as the Great Depression of 1929. But Nostradamus had a jib he landed on Hitler. He literally stated that he was not the Elector of Saxony. The Elector of Saxony was a noble man who took his responsibility quite seriously. One of that line defended Martin Luther during his fight with the Papacy. Hitler was the opposite of the line of Electors of Saxony, exactly as Nostradamus indicates. And, the part about him being unworthy of THE GOLD is a clear reference to the murderous principles Hitler set in motion. No murderer who murdered on the scale of Hitler would be worthy of Heaven. Hitler’s dying, unrepentant, gives further backing to this. Hitler was a true mad man, one who did little good during his time in power.
De Bourze villa à la dame Guyrlande,
L’on mettra sus par trahison faicte,
Le grand prelat de Leon par Formande,
Faux pellerins & ravisseurs defaicte.
Note on Translation: Formande is not translatable as it is written. That said, it is obviously the name of a place and has been altered to rhyme with Guyrlande of line 1. A possibility is Formando, Italy. Another possibility is Formandolucia, a tiny suburb of Corcoba, Spain, which fits the Leon of the same line. Bourze is also not known, though there are a few streets named Bourse in France.
The only place that can be found is Leon, a major city in Spain. I must leave this to the ingenuity of the reader.
De plus profond de l’Espaigne enseigne,
Sortant du bout & des fins de l’Europe,
Troubles passant auptes du pont de Laigne,
Sera deffaicte par bandes sa grand troppe.
There are two possible solutions to this quatrain, and as of this time, I have not decided which one.
The first one: Napoléon conquered Spain, then sent the Grand Armée into Russia, with disastrous results.
The second one: Hitler started fighting his type of warfare in Spain, which for him was a practice ground. Then, he launched his war, conquering far and wide, only to be defeated by Russia, then called the Soviet Union.
Both can fulfill this quatrain: both conquered much of Europe and both went to Spain before they went into Russia. The only question is, which one does this quatrain refer to? I must admit, I am leaning towards the Hitler answer for two reasons: First Hitler conquered France - there are several Laigne's in France and Hitler's army troubled many travelers in France. Second, Franco, recipient of Hitler's largress during the Spanish Civil War, repaid Hitler's generosity by sending a division to participate in Barbarosa. But I must admit that the Napoléon one has a very good argument in that he did conquer Spain and his Grande Armée was crushed by the Russians.
What is worse for me is I cannot utilize my rule to focus on the French explanation because ... they both involve France!
Gardin du monde au pres de cité neufue,
Dans le chemin de montaignes cavees,
Sera saisi & plongé dans la Cuve,
Beuvant par force eaux soulfre envenimees.
Most commentators I have read have interpreted this as being the city of New York. I will be blunt - They are wrong.
The focus of the quatrain is not the city, but the garden: Garden of the world. The garden is in the presence (near) the new city which has hollow mountain, as apt a description of skyscrapers as there ever was, but the focus on the quatrain is not on the city but on the garden. It is the garden that is seized and plunged into ferment, its inhabitants forced to drink sulfurous water, likely water poisoned by sulphuric acid.
With this in mind, there is only one place where this quatrain can be fulfilled: New Jersey. The state of New Jersey is known as the Garden State. It is near New York City (the city of the hollow mountains), completing the placing which takes up the first two lines.
This can only mean that the state of New Jersey will be forced to endure some man-made calamity in the future. Most likely a terrorist attack, though if the timing is during the time of the Anti-Christ, it could be an act of war.
La Meuse au jour terre de Luxembourg,
Descouvrira Saturne & trois en lurne :
Montagne & plaine, ville, cité & bourg,
Lorrain deluge, trahison par grand hurne.
Note on Translation: For some reason, Nostradamus removed the ‘ when he wrote lurne. It should have been l’urne, the urn. Of course, it was most likely modified to rhyme with hurne, a word I cannot interpret, probably a phonetic pronunciation of a name.
The urn is Aquarius. Saturn and three means Saturn and three other planets (only three, no more, no less) in the sign of Aquarius. This is a not uncommon occurrence during the month of January when Saturn is in the sign of Aquarius. I currently have it happening next in January 2011.
The Meuse is obviously the river. The other places are well known. The key is who or what hurne is.
