The Second Century
Quatrains 31 - 40

Quatrain 31

En Campanie Cassilin sera tant,
Qu’on ne verra que d’eaux les champs couverts :
Devant apres la pluye de long temps,
Hors mis les arbres rien l’on verra de vert.

In Campania the Cassilin will be so much,
That nothing will be seen, the fields covered by water:
Before and after it will rain a long time,
Except for trees, nothing green will be seen.

Ambiguous

I found an old map concerning a battle of Cassilin, (titled Plan de la Battaile de Cassilin) so I am convinced it exists. However, where this is, and when the battle actually occurred, I cannot tell. Campania is in southern Italy, north of the toe, along the Mediterranean.

Laict, fang grenoilles escoudre en Dalmatie,
Conflict donne, peste de Balenne :
Cry sera grand par toute esclavonie,
Lors naistra monstre pres & devans Ravenne.

Milk, frog’s blood squad in Dalmatia,
Conflict given, pestilence in Balenne:
Cry will be great by all Slavonia,
During the birth of a monster near and in Ravenna.

Future?

Dalmatia is one of the regions of the modern nation of Croatia, in the Balkans. Slavonia is the region in the eastern part of Croatia. Ravenna is a city on the Adriatic. The frogs refer to the French. The frog’s blood squad is unknown, but I would say a squad of French who were killed. I am uncertain what the milk is. Balenne, likely a word modified to rhyme with Ravenne, Ravenna in line 4, I cannot interpret.

This quatrain could refer to the future, but it could also refer to events in the past – Napoléon or Mussolini, I am uncertain. I leave this to the reader to figure out.

Quatrain 33

Par le torrent qui descent de Verone,
Par lors qu’au Po guindera son entrée,
Un grand nausraige, & non moins en Garonne,
Quant ceux de Gênes marcheront leur contree.

By torrent which descends from Verona,
By those by the Po will make the entrance look stiff,
A big wreck, and not less in Garonne,
When those of Genoa will walk their country.

Ambiguous

This quatrain seems to cover the region between Northern Italy, Switzerland and Southern France. The Garonne is the river in Southwestern France. The Po River is in Northern Italy, as is the city of Verona. Those of Genoa are either the Calvinists (in France, Huguenots, in England Puritans), or the Swiss. On the whole, I tend towards the Calvinist interpretation.

Quatrain 34

L’ire insensée du combat furieux
Fera à table par freres la ser luire :
Les despartir mort, blessé, curieux,
Le sier duelle viendra en France nuire.

The senseless rage of furious battle
At the table shiny steel will be between the brothers:
The departed dead, hurt, unusual,
Proud duel will bring harm to France.

Feud between Henri III and Henri Duc de Guise

Though there has never been a duel to the death between two royal brothers, there have been duels of a different sort. Nostradamus has often used the term brothers to refer to two individuals, both of royal or noble rank, who are involved in a government, mainly because royal houses constantly referred to fellow monarchs as brothers or sisters. It is so here.

The brothers mentioned are Henri III of France and Henri, Duc de Guise. The fury was the fury that the Catholic League was bringing into the war against the Protestants. Henri III, rightful king of France, was on the defensive. Something had to be done.

The king plotted the death of the Duc. The Duc was summoned to Blois. There, they ate at the same table, King Henri showing great courtesy towards duc Henri. The murder occurred the next day, and in a way that was most unusual, especially for the king.

The murder, part of the duel between the houses of Valois and Loraine, brought harm to France because, even though the duke was dead, it did nothing to strengthen the royal hand. Instead, several cities immediately went from supporting the king to opposing him, extending the fury of the Religious Wars.

Quatrain 35

Dans deux logis de nuit le feu prendra,
Plusieurs dedans estousés & rostis :
Pres de deux fleuves pour seur il aviendra,
Sol, l’Arq, & Caper tous seront amortis.

In two homes by night the fire will take hold,
Several within suffocated and roasted:
Near two rivers it will certainly happen,
Sun, the Archer, & Capricorn all will be amortized.

Ambiguous

To amortize something is to reduce it. The last line refers to a time when the Sun is in the signs of Sagittarius and Capricorn, almost certainly the time when it transits between the two signs. This would place the timing of the quatrain around the 21st of December, according to the Gregorian calendar that we use nowadays. The two rivers is almost certainly a place where two rivers merge into one – While Paris is a classic example, other cities come to mind.

Quatrain 36

Du grand Prophete les lettres serót prinses,
Entre les mains du tyrant deviendront :
Frauder son roy seront ses enterprinses,
Mais ses rapines bien tost le troubleront.

The letters of the grand Prophet will be seized
In the hands of the tyrant they will be placed
He will undertake to deceive his sovereign
But his plundering will soon trouble him.

Ambiguous

or Future

I am going to step out on a limb, and make a rather interesting claim. If you read the biblical Book of Revelations, there is a beast who Satan gives full power, and another beast who acts like a prophet to this primary beast. This seems to be tied to the future war where the Islamite’s attempt to conquer the world.

My claim is that the future ruler of Islam will have someone who prophesies the coming of the ruler. This prophet will attempt to plunder much of the Islamic lands – a rather common occurrence unfortunately, so few so-called fundamentalist Muslims truly follow what is written in the Koran. This act, and certain letters, will come to the attention of the leader, who will, at the very least, not be pleased by the actions of his prophet.

Quatrain 37

De ce grand nombre que lon envoyera,
Pour secourir dans le fort assiegés,
Peste & famine tous les devorera,
Hors mis septante qui seront prodigés.

Of this great number that one will send,
To relieve those in the besieged fort,
Pestilence and famine will devour them all,
Except for seventy who will be beaten.

Ambiguous

This quatrain deals with a fort or a strong point. A general sends a great number of troops to relieve the fort. Unfortunately, sickness and starvation kills off all but seventy, who are beaten, defeated or killed by regular means. The key is to identify the fort or strong point.

Quatrain 38

Des condamtrés sera fait un grand nombre,
Quand les monarques seront conciliés :
Mais l’un deux viendra si malencombre,
Que guerres ensemble ne seront raliés.

The condemned will be made a great number,
When the monarchs will be reconciled:
But the one two will come be so badly obstructive,
That their reconciliation will not last long.

End of World War II, Beginning of Cold War

This quatrain, in its entirety, could only be fulfilled at a time when major nations are reconciled for some reason while there are lots of condemned people. Afterwards, the reconciliation will break apart because of the actions of one and of two. This is literally what happened.

After Hitler attacked the Soviet Union in 1941, the Soviets were reconciled with their foes, the British. After Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, the United States, a friend of Britain, was also reconciled with the Soviets. The prisoners being executed by the Nazis was reaching an all time high. Over six million would be killed before the Nazi regime would be destroyed.

It is true that only one, Britain, was a monarchy. Yet Nostradamus here referred to monarchs and monarchies as being strong rulers and strong governments. All three governments were ably ruled by strong, powerful and influential personages: Britain by Winston S. Churchill, the United States by Franklin D. Roosevelt and the Soviet Union by Joseph Stalin.

The three nations were friendly towards each other. True, there were occasional hitches. But it was towards the end of war, after Hitler had been killed and Nazi Germany defeated, that the Soviets and the British/Americans started to turn against each other. The key stumbling block was Poland. All three nations agreed that the Polish nation should be a democratic one. But, the British and Americans wanted a typical Western Democracy with free elections. The Soviets wanted what it called a Soviet Democracy, a Communist rule taking orders from Moscow. If either side had agreed to the other’s definition of Democracy, there probably would have been no problem. However, the Soviets stuck to their definition of democracy, one that they devised based on the works of Karl Marx, and the British and Americans stuck with their definition of democracy, which was a variation of the old Greek democracy. Both sides saw the other as being obstructive. When the Soviets blockaded Berlin, the United States responded and the Cold War was on.

Quatrain 39

Un an devant le conflict Italique,
Germain, Gaulois, Hespagnols por le fort :
Cherra l’escolle maison de republicque,
Ou, hors mis peu, seront suffoqué mort.

One year before the Italian conflict,
Germans, Gauls, Spaniards for the fort:
The schoolhouse home of the republic will fall,
There, except for a few, they will be choked dead.

French Revolution

The key is in the third line: The Schoolhouse home of the Republic. This has to have occurred during the first French Republic, which did everything it could, did it wrong, yet somehow continued onward.

The schoolhouse started with the National Convention, which controlled France from 1792-1795. Robespierre was the power behind the National Convention, when he fell so did the Convention. In the end, most of the members of the Convention were either executed by Robespierre or executed by the Thermidorian Convention.

In 1795, it seemed that peace was finally achieved. But it was not to be. The new government, the Directory, needed finances, and it needed to get those finances through foreign conquest. It pushed against German, North Italian (Gaulic) and Spanish territories, while those areas fought back.

The Italian campaign of 1796, considered to be the opening campaign of the Napoléonic era, occurred a year later. The Consulate and the rule of Napoléon was coming on fast, and it was the errors of the First Republic that helped to create the government of Napoléon.

Quatrain 40

Un peu apres non point longue intervalle,
Par mer & terre sera fait grand tumulte :
Beaucoup plus grande sera punge navale,
Feus, animaux, qui plus seront d’insulte.

A short time later, not without a long interval,
By sea and land will be made a a great tumult:
So much greater will be the naval battle,
Fires, animals, those who will cause greater insult.

Second World War

This refers to a war that occurs a short time after a prior war, a war fought hard by land and sea with the greatest naval battles fought up to that time. The animals have to be either horses or, remembering that Nostradamus did not know the modern terms, descriptive of modern machines.

This has to refer to the Second World War. It occurred a short time after the First World War, and an even shorter time after the Spanish Civil War (which was, to some degree a training ground for German and Italian tactics). The great land battles in the Soviet Union occurred during this time, battles that stretched hundreds of miles in area. The great battles of Coral Sea, Midway, Felipepine Sea, were the largest naval battles of all times, not in terms of number of combatants but in terms of the sheer distances involved, sometimes hundreds of miles. Also, with aircraft, the number of vehicles involved could number into the thousands on a side. The animals here has to refer to the aircraft (locusts and birds), tanks (Lions and Elephants) motorcycles (sorry, cannot figure it out) and Trucks (wagons lacking their horses).
