The Second Century
Quatrains 11 - 20

Quatrain 11

Le prochain fils de l’asnier parviendra,
Tant esleué jusque au regne des fors :
Son aspre gloire un chascus la craindra,
Mais ses enfants du regne getés hors.

The next son of the attorney will attain
Great heights in the reign of the strong:
His fierce glory will be feared by everyone,
But his children thrown out of the realm.

Napoléon Bonaparte

While I know of no accurate interpretation of the Nostradamian word asnier, the quatrain fits Napoléon so well that I have gone with it. Napoléon’s father, Carlo Buonaparte, was a solicitor during his life – that translates roughly as attorney. Napoléon was the second son of Carlo who achieved adulthood, the first being his elder brother, Joseph. Hence my translation of asnier as attorney.

The reign of the strong is an accurate interpretation of Napoléon’s reign. He was a strong person, stronger than anyone else, maybe in all of Europe. And everyone feared Napoléon, so much so that even after he was exiled to Elba, there were rumors, supposedly, that they were going to exile him farther away, or even execute him. And this fear was so great, that the Austrians and French categorically refused to allow the son of Napoléon the imperial throne.

Quatrain 12

Yeux clos, ouverts d’antique fantasie,
L’habit des seluz seront mis à neant :
Le grand monarque chastiera leur frenaisie:
Rauir des temples le tresor par devant.

Eyes closed, opened by antique fantasy,
The clothes of the alone will be put to naught:
The great monarch will punish their frenzy,
For ravishing earlier ravished the treasure of the temple.

Nazi Germany, Primitive Christianity

Note on Translation: The fourth line can be translated to read: For having ravished the treasure in front of the temple.

The key is the first line. Eyes closed, opened by antique fantasy. The antique fantasy is an ancient religion, long denied, yet for a time suddenly given new life. The second line indicates a problem with monks, the clothes of the alone are the monks. So, we have a time when Christianity is in sudden decline while an ancient religion is in the upswing.

From this, we can eliminate the French Revolution. They established the Cult of Reason and the Cult of the Supreme Being, new fantasies according to Catholics. They did not bow to an ancient fantasy.

However, Adolf Hitler did rebuild a sect based on what was a type of Christian fantasy, a Christian belief largely discredited among all Christian churches by the beginning of the 20th century. It was a fusion of God’s direct activism with a hatred of Jews.

This anti-Semitism does have an ancient history in Christian thinking, or rather in a Christian fantasy based on the inability for so many to read anything, including the Bible. The fantasy was the fiction that the Jews had helped to kill Jesus. Because of this fantasy, Jews were marginalized, rejected, spat upon and killed. Pogroms occurred in a multitude of places. And many nations deliberately and intentionally kicked out Jews simply because they were Jews.

By the 19th century, the various Christian churches were rejecting this fantasy. It was becoming widely recognized that, according to the Bible, the first Christians were Jews. Also, critical study of the Bible revealed that it was not the Jews as a whole who pushed for the death of Jesus but rather the corrupt Jewish leadership. It was becoming accepted that the Jewish people should not be punished for the acts of the corrupt leaders. Besides, Biblical sources stated that many of the Jews hated the fact that Jesus was being executed, many wept for him as he carried the cross to the place of execution – why kill the descendants of those who wept for Jesus?

But the fantasy did not die easily. It was revived in various places like the infamous Dreyfus case in France. Hitler was simply the last to officially revive the ancient Christian fantasy. Calling it Positive Christianity, he tried to use it to destroy the Jewish people. Admittedly many parish priests and ministers did not oppose him. But others did oppose him – they tended to disappear.

The great monarch here has to stand for God. The quatrain has a religious significance, so the great monarch is the great monarch of the universe whom, according to all Christian teaching, can only be God. Therefore, the last two lines refer to God and how he ultimately punishes the Nazis for their acts, especially their “ravaging the treasure of the temple.” The temple of course is Jewish, not a Christian temple, for the Christians had no temples. The treasure of the temple, therefore, refers to the possessions of the Jews.

Quatrain 13

La corpse sans ame plus n’e en sacrifice
Jour de la mort mis en nativité :
L’esprit divin sera l’ame felice,
Voyant le verbe en son eternité.

No longer will the body be sacrificed without the soul
The day of death put for the nativity:
The divine spirit will make the soul happy,
Seeing the word in its eternity.

Council of Trent

Many Catholics believe that the Catholic creed was written in stone from the very beginning. In fact, the truth is far different. Ecclesiastical councils have long played a part in shaping the teachings of the church. This council was one of them.

Before the Council of Trent, the Catholic Church did not accept the now accepted dogma that the bread and wine was in reality the body and blood of Christ. It was simply an act that was done in remembrance of the sacrifice Jesus did centuries ago. But in 1563, during the Council of Trent, it was decided by the bishops in attendance that the rite of the bread and wine caused a miraculous reality, the literal body and blood of Christ; this was based on the words of Jesus as recorded in the Gospels.

In this quatrain, Nostradamus is dealing with the spiritual side of this change.

Quatrain 14

A Tours, Gien, gardé seront yelux penetrans,
Descouvriront le loing la grand sereine :
Elle & sa suitte au port seront entrans,
Combat, poussés, puissance souveraine.

In Tours, Gien, the penetrating eyes will be guarded,
Will discover from afar the Great Serene:
She and her suite will enter the harbor,
Combat, thrust, sovereign power.

Ambiguous

Tours and Gien are both located on the Loire River. This is talking about a French woman of power who enters a harbor during a time of conflict. She is called serene, the Great Serene, by Nostradamus, but who she is remains a mystery. The key depends on who the Great Serene is, for she is obviously a female of great importance.

Quatrain 15

Un peu devant monarque trucidé,
Castor Pollux en nef, altre crinite :
L’erain publiq par terre & mer vuidé,
Pise, Ast, Ferrare, Turin, terre intereicte.

Little before the monarch is killed,
Castor Pollux in the ship, bearded star:
The public treasure by land and sea emptied,
Pisa, Asti, Ferrare, Turin, land interdicted.

Fulfilled?

Castor and Pollux are the twins, Gemini. If the ship is also an astronomical configuration, then it is the ship Argo. The bearded star would be a comet. Trouble is, the last line has never happened, at least as written.

Lee McCann has offered a rather novel interpretation, one which I cannot find much fault with. Castor and Pollux refer to Henri III of France and Henri de Navarre. Before Henri III was assassinated, the two put aside their religious differences and made common cause (ship of state) against the Catholic League. Now this did happen and is historically verifiable. Also, the state of the public funds available to the French government does agree with what Nostradamus wrote in line 3.

My problem with this is that McCann twists line 4 a bit. He claims that the cities listed on line 4 refers to the interdict on France which applied throughout the Italian lands. While there was a papal interdict that applied to France during this time, it does not seem to agree with what Nostradamus wrote in line 4, which seems to refer to an interdict on the four Italian cities listed. This is my only complaint with this novel interpretation. I present it here because McCann may be correct and my researches cannot come up with anything better.

Quatrain 16

Naples, Palerme, Secille, Syracuses,
Nouveaux tyrans, fulgutes feux celestes :
Force de Londres, Gand, Brucelles & Suses,
Grand hecatombe, triumphe, faire festes.

Naples, Palermo, Sicily, Syracuse,
New tyrants, lightning fires the celestial sphere
Force of London, Ghent, Brussels and Susa
Great slaughter, triumph makes festivities.

Fascism in Italy, Second World War

Line 1 refers to Italy. Line 2 refers to the Fascists, who lit the airwaves with their propaganda. But Mussolini and the Fascists joined their forces with Hitler and the Nazis. Consequently, the allied forces of the United Nations are represented in the third line. Susa is a tiny village in Italy along the French border. Ghent and Brussels refers to Belgium forces who opposed Hitler (escapees who fled to Britain) And yes, true to line 4, the drive up the Italian peninsula resulted in much slaughter of Italian blood, but great rejoicing once the war ended.

Quatrain 17

Le camp du temple de la vierge vestale,
Non esloigné d’Ethne & monts Pyrenées :
Le grand conduict est caché dans la male
North getés fleuves & vignes mastinées.

The encampment of the temple of the Vestal Virgin,
Not far from Ethne and the Pyrenees mountains:
The big conduit is hidden in the affliction,
North rivers overflow and grapevines spoiled.

Ambiguous

What makes this so interesting is that Nostradamus used the English word North instead of the French Nord or the more ancient Aquilon in this quatrain. I can only assume the English are somehow involved in line 4. It also has to be recent, as only recently is it realistically possible for grape vines to grow in English soil, normally it is too cool and grape vines could only grow in more southern climates.

The conduit could be the tunnel that runs under the water between Dover and Calais. The Pyrenees Mountains are, of course, the mountain range that is the border between France and Spain. The temple of the Vestal Virgin refers to an old Roman custom, referring to the virgins who worshiped Vesta, the Roman goddess of the hearth – it was the only female priesthood in Rome. Since Rome ruled such a wide area, it is likely that there were temples to Vesta throughout the region where modern day France and Spain are today.

However, the word Ethne is ambiguous. I cannot find a location known as Ethne. So, it is probably a Nostradamian anagram with multiple meanings. The only clue I can find is that the Encyclopedia Mythica claims that Ethne was an ancient Irish goddess who lived on the milk of a cow; this could be a tie to Vesta and the Vestal Virgins.

Quatrain 18

Nouvelle & pluie subite impetueuse,
Empeschera subit deux excercites :
Pierre, ciel, feux faire la mer pierreuse,
La mort de sept terre & marin subites.

Rain, new and impetuously sudden,
Will halt two armies:
Stone, heaven, fire makes the sea stony,
The death of seven by land and sea.

Future

To make a sea stony is not something that can be done by man, unless one takes a few million tons of rock and dumps it in a specific location. However, this can be tied to Quatrain 69 of the First Century, which describes a gigantic meteorite plowing into an ocean. The explosion from that could come down as a very stony rain, and it could make the sea stony in certain places. The only question is the seven. Does it refer to people or cities? We will not be able to find out until the quatrain is fulfilled.

Quatrain 19

Nouveaux venus, lieu, basty sans defence
Occuper la place par lors inhabitable :
Prez, maisons, champs, villes, prendre à plasance,
Faim, peste, guerre, arpen long labourable.

Venus the newcomer, place, build without defense,
Occupy the place for long uninhabitable:
Meadows, houses, fields, cities to take in pleasure,
Hunger, plague, war, long arable acres.

Israel, the Negev Desert

Built without defense is the first clue: only in more modern times have cities been built without defensive walls. Occupy the place for long uninhabitable is the second: as the rest of the world is habitable, we are limited to harsh deserts. The third line eliminates all the deserts except the Negev. The last line points right at the Negev.

This is a reference to the state of Israel. But of greatest importance is the Negev Desert. The Israelis were the ones who turned a virtual wasteland of a desert into a blooming oasis. From the sands of the desert have emerged farms, parks, homes and yes, even cities.

The last line is a reference to the contradictory nature in which Israel exists. From attacks and from Palestinians who want their land back, the Israelites are forced to endure the constant effects of warfare. As for the arpen, it is a measure of land; arpent in modern French is acre in English. Nostradamus says it is arable, land that can grow crops. This is certainly true of the Negev this day.

A warning is however given in the first line: Venus the newcomer! Venus, the goddess of love, romance, fun and pleasure, was a fickle goddess, easily given to great anger and rage. People of Israel, be warned! This warning came from almost five centuries ago, before you even existed.

Quatrain 20

Freres & seurs en diverse leiux captifs,
Se trouveront passer pres du monarque :
Les contempler sesrameaux ententisz,
Desplaisant voir métó, front, nez, les marques.

Brothers and sisters in diverse places captive,
Will find themselves passing by the monarch:
Contemplating them his descendants are attentive,
Displeased to see the marks on chin, forehead and nose.

Fulfilled, but What or Which?

Nostradamus himself stated that every quatrain would have one definite tie. It would refer to either a single place, a single event, or a single time. Always there would be something singular in the quatrain to tie it into a specific interpretation.

Now, I am convinced that Nostradamus saw something that caused him to write this quatrain in this way. The problem is that this scene could happen in many situations. From monarchies to dictatorships, even to presidencies (for Nostradamus would call all 3 leader types monarchs), the leader would be a poor leader indeed if he was not enraged to see harmed captives paraded in front of him, especially when the captives were paraded in front of his own children.

The earliest possible fulfillment would have occurred soon after Nostradamus presented this quatrain to the world. The latest? During this, the 21st century as I write this, or even after. Take your pick as to which event the prophet saw.
