Almanac Year 1559

Sur ladite année 1559

Presage 34

Pœur, glas grand pille passer mer, croistre regne,
Sectes Sacrez outre mer plus polis :
Peste chaut, feu, Roy d’Aquilon l’enseigne,
Dresser trophée, cité HENRIPOLIS.

Fear, knell, great pillage to pass the sea, the reign grows,
Sacred Sects besides the sea are more polished:
Pestilence matters little, fire, the ensign of the King of the North,
Raise a trophy, the city HENRIPOLIS.

Future

Henripolis, or the City of Henri, does not exist. Yet! That said, Henripolis means City of Henri, so it could be any city name. The King of the North is strongly indicative of the Aquilon kings of

Plus le Grand n’estre, pluye au chat, le cristal.
Tumulte esmeu, de tons biens abondance :
Razez Sacrez, neufs, vieux espouvental,
Esleu ingrat, mort, plaint, joye, alliance.

The greater is not, is rain to the cat, the crystal.
Disorder moved, shades of good abundance:
The Sacred shaved, new, old bugbear,
Ungrateful elected, dead, sorry, joy, alliance.

1559 Février

Presage 36

Grain corrompu, air pestilent, locusts,
Subit cherra, noue nouvelle naistre :
Captifs ferrez, legers, haut bas ovustes,
Par ses os mal qu’a Roy n’a voulu estre.

Grain corrupt, air pestilent, locusts,
Sudden fall, new ties born:
Captives shoes, mild, Ovist high to low,
By his bad bone which has the King where he does not want to be.

Ambiguous

An ovist is a believer of ovism, the now discredited belief that the female reproductive organs, the ovum, holds all that the future child needed to grow. This belief holds that the male just acts as a stimulant to cause the egg to grow.

This almost demands that this quatrain is fulfilled. That said, it is possible that somewhere there are a group of people who are ovist’s. There are, after all, people who believe in a flat earth.

That Nostradamus would know such medical things is not surprising. After all, he was a Doctor of Physique, what we now call a Medical Doctor. Such claims, even obsolete ones, would grab his attention.

Presage 37

Saisis au temple, par sectes longue brigue,
Esleu ravi au bois forme querelle :
Septante pars naistre nouvelle ligue,
De la leur mort, Roy appaisé, nouvelle.

Grabbed in the temple, by sects long built,
Elected robbed of wood forms quarrel:
Seventy by the birth of the new league,
Of their death the King is newly appeased.

1559 Avril

Presage 38

Roy salué Victeur, Imperateur,
La foy faussée, le Royal fait cognu :
Sang Mathien, Roy fait supereatur,
De gent superbe humble par pleurs venu.

The King greeted as Victor, Imperator,
The distorted faith, the Royal strikes:
Mathien blood, the King made superior,
From a superior people humility by tears come.

Adolf Hitler and Nazi Germany

The Imperator was the actual title of the Roman Emperor.

Nobody, not even Napoléon and the French fits this quatrain quite like Hitler and the Germans do. Even before he assumed office, he was the Fuhrer, the leader, the future victor. He was, for all intents and purposes, the emperor of the Nazi party. Wherever he went, he was greeted with wild delirium and rapt devotion. He imposed his faith on Germany, a greatly distorted faith based on the mastery of Aryans over all other races, especially the Jews. Blood flowed, mainly Jewish blood at the beginning, but that of other nations as well. Up to 1942, Hitler could almost do no wrong. However, the end of his “reign” was inevitable. Through the blood and tears that the Germans shed, this proud race that called itself the master race finally found humility.

1559 May

Presage 29

Par le despit nopces, epithalame,
Par les trios parts Rouges, Rezez partis :
Au jeune noir remis par flamme l’ame,
Au grand Neptune Ogmius convertis.

By the spiteful nuptials, Epithalamium,
By the three red parts, Rezzez parties:
To the young black delayed by the flame of the friend,
Ogmius converts the great Neptune.

Future

Ogmios is the Celtic god of communication. It refers to a future leader, most likely our future Henri. Beyond a doubt Neptune refers to England. An epithalamium is a wedding or nuptial song sung to the bride and groom.

Presage 40

De maison sept par mort mortelle suite,
Gresle, tempeste, pestilent mal, fureurs :
Roy d’Orient d’Occident tous en fuire,
Subjuguera les jadis conquereurs.

By home seven by death mortal suite,
Hail, tempest, evil pestilence, fury:
King of the East the West in avoidance,
Will subjugate the conquerors of the past.

General Quatrain during the Religious Wars

A curious consideration is the first line. The seven in the Centuries often referred to the seven children of Henri II and Catherine de Medici. The first line refers to the general dissolution and eventual destruction of the House of Valois. The seven were the last to survive infancy. As they died off, one by one, without descendants (save Claude, but she married into another house) the house that had ruled France for so long died with them.

The second line refers to the general turmoil of the Religious Wars. The hail of war. The tempest of war. The fury and evil pestilence of war.

The last two lines refer to the relations between the Christian Kings of the lethargic West and the Ottoman Sultan of the East. The Ottoman was supreme wherever he chose to go. Several times the Christians had tried to mount expeditions to defeat the Ottomans, each time without success. However, the West, in avoidance of the issue while the Sultan conquered the Isle of Rhodes and later attacked Malta, were finally forced into action a last time. Ten nations, lead by Spain, met the Ottoman fleet off of Lepanto and, this time, conquered it. The Ottoman naval supremacy was decimated. Though the Ottomans built more ships, rebuilding their fleet in a matter of years, they did not have the skilled sailors to man them. The power had passed to the other side; though the Christians did not utilize it, the Ottomans were well aware of it.

Presage 41

Predons pillez chaleur, grand seicheresse,
Par trop non estre, cas non veu, inoüi :
A l’estranger la trop grand caresse,
Neuf pays Roy, l’Orient esblouy.

Predominately pillage and heat, great dryness,
Great surplus is not, this is not wanted, unprecedented:
To the foreigner the too great a caress,
Nine lands king, the dazzled East.

Future

The last line places the quatrain.

1559 Aoust

Presage 42

L’Urne trouvée, la cité tributaire,
Champs divisez nouvelle tromperie :
L’Hispan blessé, faim, peste, militaire,
Moq obstiné, confus, mal, resverie.

The urn found, the city tributary,
Fields divided new deception:
The Hispanics hurt, hunger, pestilence, military,
Mocking stubbornness, confused, wrong, imagining.

Ambiguous

Hispan is curious. It is obviously a reference to Hispania, the Roman name for the Iberian Peninsula and where we get the term Hispanic from, but whether it refers to the Spanish or the Hispanics of Latin America is uncertain. Most likely the former, but I cannot at this time rule out the later.

1559 Septembre

Presage 43

Vierges & vesues, vostre hon temps s’approche,
Point ne sera ce que l’on pretendra :
Loin s’en faudra que soit nouvelle approche,
Bien aisez pris, bien remis, pis tiendra.

Virgins and widows, your time of shame approaches,
The relevance will not be what they pretend:
Far will be the need of the new approach,
Good easily captured, good delayed, worse will hold.

1559 Octobre

Presage 44

Icy dedans se paracheura,
Les troiscrads hors de BON BOURG sera loing :
Encontre d’eux l’un d’eux conspirera,
Au bout du mois on verra le besoin.

Here inside the finish,
The troiscrads out of the GOOD MARKET TOWN will be long:
Encountering them, one of them will conspire,
At the end of the month they will see the need.

Ambiguous

This is, in my opinion, one of Nostradamus’ more important quatrains. The reason for this are the words: BON BOURG, or GOOD BOURG, literally GOOD MARKET TOWN. I could not find any Bonbourg, or any variant. I did find a Beaubourg, but that seems to be a region of Paris. Regardless, this is the key to the quatrain.

1559 Novembre

Presage 45

Propostenus, nopces recommences,
La Grand Grand sortira hors de France :
Voix à Romagne de crier non lassée,
Reçoit la paix par trop feinte asseurance.

The preposterous nuptials begins again,
The greatest will go out of France:
Voice in Rome to shout not permitted,
Acknowledge the peace by too much fake assurance.

Congress of Vienna

The greatest of France was Napoléon Bonaparte, it can be no other. Not even Louis XIV was as great as Napoléon was and Louis never left France. Napoléon's leaving France ended the Napoléonic Wars, at least till the 100 days. The voice in Rome was the voice of Pius VII, who had long suffered under Napoléon. When others were talking about vengeance, Pius would hear nothing of it. The nuptials here is symbolic, the peace talks were to a large degree a tidy composite of fake assurances and land grabbing.

1559 Decembré

Presage 46

La joye en larmes viendra captiver Mars,
Devant le Grand seront esmeus Divins :
Sans sonner mot entreront par trois pars,
Mars assoupy, dessus glas troutent vins.

The joy in tears will come to enthrall Mars,
In front of the Great the Divines will be moved:
Without a sound will enter by three parts,
Mars drowsy, over the knell uncovers the wines.

Rise of Fascism

The three parts are the three nations that saw the arising of Fascism. Italy was the first; under Benito Mussolini Italy strove to become strong again, it eventually embraced warfare and the spread of the imperium. Hitler was the second; from the beginning Nazi Germany was developing towards war. Franco's Spain was the third, it was literally born in the fires of the Spanish Civil War.

The last line indicates that the warlike tendencies of Fascism did not serve the leaders. Mussolini embraced war and lost all in 1933. Hitler who rose to power on a promise of war was surrounded and committed suicide in 1945. Only Franco, forewarned by the Spanish Civil War that thrust him into power, resisted the sirens call. He was the only one to "uncover the wine" before it was too late.
