Lever sain, sang, mais esmeu, rien d’accord,
Infinis murtres captifs, morts, prevenus :
Tant d’eau & peste, peu de tout sonnez cors,
Pris, morts, fuits, grands, devenir, venus.
Venus here represents the Greek goddess and what she ruled, feminine wiles, girlish babble, heterosexual love. It also represents the pleasures that one gets when associating with women.
This represents the time before the Second World War. Hitler was already in power. He had written a blueprint of his plans, Mein Kampf. He had extoled the volk, the German common person and strongly supported, at least publically, their lifestyle. He had already marched into the Rhineland which alone he would and did find international favor for. But his annexation of Austria had shocked much of the world and he had made promises concerning Czechoslovakia, promises that he refused to adhere to once he marched into the Sudetland.
It was the days of the bloodless conquests and their aftermath. Hitler simply marched and the nation he attacked went down without a fight. The Czechoslovak nation was destroyed when the Slovaks separated from the Czechs. Yet until the Germans marched into the Czech Republic and entered Prague, nobody sounded the horns, except such "oddball warmongers" like Winston Churchill who were not listened to. Inside the conquered nations, violence reigned, especially in Austria which embraced more wholeheartedly than Germany did the anti-Jewish policies of Hitler. Anyone who had read Mein Kampf, like Churchill did, could have anticipated this. But the talk was all about peace and prosperity. Regardless of the murders and cruelties happening, everyone was convinced that peace and trade would reign.
Tant d’eau, tant morts, tant d’armes esmouvoir,
Rien d’accordé. Le Grand tenu captif :
Que sang humain, rage, fureur n’avoir :
Tard penitent, peste, guerre motif.
If you give fureur, which means fury, a second translation at the same time, you can get Fuhrer. This would place this quatrain in the Second World War. Even if this secondary meaning is not true, the quatrain is fulfilled by Hitler as he was certainly a furious leader.
Hitler’s early successes were many. Between him and the Russians, between him and the French and British, even between the Russians and the French and British, and between the French and the British, there were no real agreements. The course of the war saw the deaths of over forty million soldiers, the number is now higher only because the Russians have admitted to even more casualties in their nation. The great of countries like France, Yugoslavia and Greece were held captive by Heir Hitler and his forces. But Hitler and his friend, Benito Mussolini, were equally captive by their own boasts and their willingness to launch war. The number of tanks, guns, aircraft and other weapons attained such numbers as have never been equaled. And true to the last line, Hitler eventually regretted launching his war, wanting to be able to walk his beloved Bavarian countryside in peace. But this regret was too late, coming in 1942-43 when the big three of the United Kingdom, the Soviet Union and the United States were totally determined to eradicate Hitler once and for all.
Des ennemis mort de langue s’approche,
Le Debonnaire en paix voudra reduira :
Les obstinez voudront perdue la proche,
Surpris, captifs, & suspects fureur nuire.
The debonair one is Joseph Stalin, a fairly good looking individual, polished and refined, who did love to smoke his pipe. This fact helps to not only place the quatrain, but helps it to lay out to us like an open book, after a bit of thought.
The enemies were the Nazis. They were determined to destroy anything and everything that did not go their way. Hitler gave credence to Mussolini and to Togo, but to few others.
The obstinate one is curious. Normally this would almost certainly Winston Churchill who was supremely obstinate in his pursuit of victory over Hitler. But the fact that the Debonair one wants to reduce the “death of language” in peace is indicative of the time before Churchill got into power. So it cannot be Churchill.
A critical clue comes from the fact that, thanks to what Benes told Churchill, we know that Stalin felt he owed Benes a real debt of honor. He seriously wanted to protect Czechoslovakia from the Nazis. This opposition to Herr Hitler and support for Benes strongly indicates the Sudetenland Crisis which Hitler invoked, almost to his peril.
When one considers that the situation in this light, it becomes apparent that the obstinate one was Herr Hitler himself. Having thrust himself into the situation where he had to gain the Sudetenland or risk losing everything, including his power, he was almost willing to throw everything off and start the war he so desperately wanted. That he did not was mainly due to the fact that he knew not only would he lose but that he would likely be deposed by the military. So, even though he was furious with Chamberlain, he bowed down to bitter necessity and agreed to Munich.
Consequently we know what happened. The enemies, the Nazis, wanted to bring about the dismemberment of the Czech nation and almost all languages. The soviets, under Stalin, acted to intervene on behalf of the Czech nation and most importantly on behalf of President Benes. Hitler, obstinately, threw everything he could into the issue and almost got himself dragged down. In this way the first three lines are easily deciphered and lead up to the Munich Conference.
The last line is descriptive of the consequences of the Munich Conference. Everyone was surprised by the results. The French and British were surprised and pleased by the result, thinking that peace was assured; they would become captive of the upcoming war. The Czech’s were surprised and dismayed; they would become captive to the Third Reich. And Hitler’s rage would bring harm to everyone.
Peres & meres morts de deuls infinis,
Femmes à deul la pestilente monstre :
Le Grand plus n’estre, tout le monde finir,
Soubz paix, repos, & trestous allencontre.
I cannot figure out the word allencontre. The closest I can come up with is “against allen”, but that makes no sense. It is likely altered to rhyme with monstre of line 2.
En debats Princes & Chrestiente esmeue,
Gentils estranges, siege & CHRIST moleste :
Venu tresmal prou bien, mortelle veue,
Mort Orient peste, faim, mal traite.
Note the key word of CHRIST. Normally this is beyond my ability to understand, but in this case I think I understand what Nostradamus was saying. It is not Jesus who is being molested but true Christians who are targeted. Those who forsake the teachings of the various churches, the rantings of the Old Testament or the mistakes of the Apostolic Letters and focus simply and solely on the teachings of Jesus will be persecuted and harmed.
The last line dictates when this quatrain will happen. The Eastern pestilence indicates this will occur in the future, most likely during the War of the Anti-Christ. Nostradamus names two Anti-Christs occurring at the same time, the first is an individual so evil he makes Hitler look like a saint. This refers to the second, a set of laws that Nostradamus says persecutes Christians.
Terre trembler, tué prodige, monster,
Captifs sans nombre, faire defaite, faite :
D’aller sur mer adviendra malencontre,
Fier contre fier mal fait de contrefaite.
L’injuste bas fort l’on molestera,
Gresle, inonder, thresor, & grave marbre :
Chef de suard peuple à la lame à mort tuera,
Et attachée sera la lame à l’arbre.
Suard is a proper surname that originated in France. It is possible that Nostradamus is talking about a leader whose surname is Suard.
De quel non mal & inexcusable suite,
Le few non duel, le legat hors confus :
Au plus blessé ne sera faite luite,
La fin de Juin le fil coupé de fus.
Note: An interesting observation must be made about this presage. Many commentators have stated that the presages need to occur on the month and year they were titled under. This quatrain "gives the lie" to that claim. The last line gives the month when a significant event is supposed to occur – the end of June. But June is before July. Therefore this could not happen in the month of July, as the detractors claim.
Bons finement affoiblis par accords,
Mars & Prelats unis n’arresteront :
Le Grands confus par dons incidez corps,
Dignes indignes biens indues saisiront.
This is almost certainly a quatrain concerning the United States. The reason he would include it is because it will have important implications on France in the near future. If true, then it is a warning to both France and to the United States, to the former to beware of what is happening across the ocean, to the latter to break away and to reject who has been leading them.
The first line is strongly reminiscent of the times when almost everyone could afford basic goods and services throughout Europe, North America, Japan and the Pacific/Indian Islands – Since Nostradamus would focus on France this time from the 1950's to about 2000 would be of interest to him. That said, the quatrain obviously deals with the time after this, when greed and selfishness is becoming the overriding concern.
Note that Nostradamus is here indicating a union between the leaders of the various churches and the drive for war. This certainly is happening at this time in the United States and I understand it is happening to a lesser degree in the religious designs of Europe. But what many do not realize is that it started by an agreement in the 1970's. An agreement between the southern Moral Majority church leadership and the Republican Party leadership which gave the Republicans control of the South in exchange for the Republicans following certain policies that the southern churches desired. Nostradamus gives a very apt description of the result in the third line: Great confusion by indecent bodies given., Indecent people causing great confusion.
The last line is sort of strange as written. But slightly rewritten, it makes sense. Worthy and unworthy goods will be unduly grabbed.
De bien en malle temps se changera,
Le pache d’Aust, des plus Grands esperance :
Des Grands deul LVIS trop plus trebuchera,
Congnus Razez pouvoir ni congnoissance.
Congnus Razez could be a phonetic rendition of a name. More on this I cannot say at the moment.
Voicy les mois par maux tant à doubter,
Mors, tous seigner peste, faim, quereller :
Ceux de rebours d’exil viendront noter,
Grands, secrets, morts, non de contreroller.
There are several possible fulfillments of this quatrain. But the most notable is that of the October Revolution and its consequences. With the emergence of Communism, every nation suddenly had a stake in the downfall of the Bolshevik regime. The Russian Civil War resulted, fought between the Communists on one side, and the White Russians, backed by the rest of the world, on the other. The White Russians, the banished under the Bolshevik edicts, were exceptionally brutal in their warfare. Tactics and brutality attributed to the Bolsheviks were actually started by the Whites. Because of this, doubt and dissention was rampant among both sides. And while the Bolsheviks willingly descended to the level of terror that the Whites had started, they fought with their back to the literal wall. For several years neither side was in control.
Par mort mort mordre, conseil, vol pestifere,
On n’osera Marins assaillir :
Deucalion un dernier trouble faire,
Peu de gens jeunes demy morts tresssaillir.
Deucalion is the Greek equivalent of Noah, saved from the floods of Zeus by his father Prometheus. Unlikel the Israeli story, just Deucalion and his wife Pyrrha are saved. Also, the flood was localized, not universal.
This indicates major flooding somewhere. The Greek flavor of Deucalion indicates that the flooding occurs in or around Greece.
Mort par despit fera les autres luire,
Et en haut lieu de grands maux advenir :
Tristes concepts à chacun viendront nuire,
Temporel digne, la Messe parvenir.
This seems to indicate that in the future a return to Christianity will occur in Europe. But whether it is the old mass of symbolism or a truer mass based on a true understanding of the teachings of Jesus cannot be said at this time.
