L’an sextil pluyes froment abonder, haines,
Aux hommes joye, Princes Rois en divorce :
Troupeau perir, mutations humaines,
Peuple affoulé: & poison soubs l’escorce.

The sextile year rains wheat to abound, hate,
Joy to men, Princes Kings in divorce:
The herd perishes, human mutations,
People thrown into a panic: and poison under the bark.

Ambiguous

A sextile is an astrological configuration. It refers to two planets at a sixty degree aspect from each other. It covers a sixth of the circumference around the entire chart.

The sextile year could have multiple meanings. Knowing Nostradamus, it would not surprise me to find that they all are correct. Of course, with this likely not having been fulfilled, it is hard for me to state what the meanings are. But as far as I can speculate, the first meaning is a year with the number six as the last digit, maybe there being more than one six in the numbering of the year. The second meaning is that this is one sixth into the year. The third is that it has a duration of only a sixth of a year. The fourth, a year where there are a predominance of astrological sextiles at the beginning of the year. The last is that the year number is evenly divisible by the number six.

Worldwide Events 2010's

This quatrain has to be about the current times. And it is almost worldwide. There is not any region that escapes the hatred and divisiveness that seems to be consuming everything.

In the Middle East, an organization that calls itself the Islamic State, also known as DAESH, and founded on Wahhabism took over a large part of Syria and Iraq. They have declared only followers of the Islamic State to be Muslims and have declared eternal war on everyone who is not a member of the Islamic State. Many nations in the Middle East and around the world have turned against them. Refugees are swarming from the combat areas, desperately trying to find safe havens where they can raise their children and live lives of peace. Unfortunately, a few terrorists try to mix themselves among the innocent.

In Russia Vladimir Putin, an ex-KGB official, has become leader of that nation. It is an open secret that he uses old KGB style terror tactics to retain control. Seeking to restore the greatness of Russia, he is seeking to disrupt foreign governments that could oppose him while assassinating his own citizens who stand up to him.

In Europe, the European Union is starting to break apart. Strains in the structure of the union have become apparent in the southernmost member nations and Britain has declared its intention to leave the union. The first attempt to create a union of Europe is collapsing. At the same time, ardent nationalism is rising in many of the nations of Europe. Hostility to Islamic refugees is rising, hatred of people foreign is increasing.

In the United States, an ardently selfish individual has obtained control of the nation. Unable, or unwilling, to lead the nation as it needs to be lead, he bases all of his decisions on his own greed and selfishness. Making the US hated throughout the world, he is the epitome of everything that outsiders hate concerning the nation.

And this is just a sampling. The Philippines, China, Taiwan, Japan, the nations of Africa, the building feud between Hindu and Muslim – all is rising belligerence and hatred, increasing discord among all and resulting in very diverse times.

It gets worse. Thanks to economic policies resulting in global warming, drought is increasing in many parts of the world. Among others, drought is consuming the nation of Syria, but is the leader of that nation, Bashar al-Assad, being driven out? No, he has support from Russia which wants to increase its presence in the Middle East. Other famines and droughts throughout the world also do not see the leaders being deposed, instead they thrive.

Yes, it is possible to apply this quatrain to other times, or at least part of the quatrain; the times before the First and Second World Wars come to mind. Also the times before the French Revolution/Napoleonic Wars can apply. But the sheer magnitude of divisiveness has never been matched. And the famines are occuring at a level never before seen. It is a humanitarian disaster before our eyes.

The arguments are great and growing. The greater powers of the upcoming wars are developing. Disaster is upon us. And yes, Nostradamus saw it.

Great flood, noise of conspired death,
Renovated age, the three in great discord:
By the fires end the peaceful empire,
Rain preventing agreement to Mahns advice.

Ambiguous

Mahns is a surname of numerous individuals. I cannot tell if this is what Nostradamus meant, or if it refers to a word that I cannot figure out.

Between Kings they will see the hate approaching,
Dissensions and Wars begin:
Great change new disorder grows,
The plebian order they will come to offend.

Approach to the First World War

The main kings of this quatrain are Nicholas Alexandrovich Romanov of Russia, Friedrich Wilhelm Viktor Albrecht Hohenzollern of Prussia, Franz Joseph Hapsburg of Austria-Hungary, Victor Emmanuel Savoy III of Italy, and George Frederick Ernest Albert Saxe-Coburg-Gotha of the United Kingdom. With the addition of the Republic of France, the Czar of Bulgaria and the Sultan of Turkey, almost all the nations were in one way or another conspiring to start a war on their own terms, all but one being monarchies. Animosity and hatred continued to grow, pride and martial might predominated. In Austria and in Germany, disloyalty to the Emperor and Kaiser began to be felt, especially when the two wanted to choose paths that would lead away from war. The common people, the plebeians, wanted peace, but the aristocratic leadership wanted war. They got it.

Incomplete Quatrain

This quatrain is definitely incomplete. The asterisk on the third line indicates that there is something there, something that Sève could not read. It is at times like this that I really wish I had a copy of the original almanac that Nostradamus wrote, the one for the year 1564. Unfortunately, all I have is what came to me through Sève.

Felices Rois & Grands, autre mort craindre.

Unstable times, fevers, plague, lazy sickness,
Wars, debates, time, desolate without pretending:
Submersions, Prince to miners’ rigor,
Peaceful Kings and Great ones, other fear death.

1914-1919

During the early years of the Great War, the War to End All Wars, the nobility who had wanted the war were at peace with what they had done, at least for a while. All the others were in the depths of despair and the kings who were more often than not thrown into the war against their will were in anguish. The war seemed to be without end. To make it worse, the 1918 Flu Pandemic hit, causing thousands of people to die, mostly normally healthy young adults. This sickness was implicated in the outbreak of encephalitis lethargica (lazy sickness) in the 1920s.

Of the place fire put the pestilence and escaped birth,
Times varying, wind, the death of the three great:
From the heavens great wrath, state of the shaved to graze,
Old meadows of death wood not much inside the grove.

Downfall of Romanov, Hohenzollern and Hapsburg

The three great ones are not people but royal houses: the three royal houses of Romanov of Russia, Hohenzollern of Prussia / Germany and Hapsburg of Austria. The rest of the quatrain speaks of the First World War and the pandemics that surrounded the downfall of the three royal houses.

En peril monde & rois feliciter,
Razes esmeu, par conseil ce qu’estoit
L’Eglise Rois pour eux peuple irriter,
Un monstrera apres ce qu’il n’estoit.

The world in danger and kings congratulate,
Shaved stirred up by counsel of who was
The English king by the people irritated,
Afterwards a monster that is what is was not.

Ambiguous or Contradictory?

Kings congratulated themselves for getting into the Napoleonic Wars, but not others. The monster is Communism, it can be no other. This, of course, renders the quatrain nonsensical. Throw in the time when the English King was irritated by the people, most likely during the reign of Charles I or James II, and you have a disaster of a quatrain.

I will admit I could be completely wrong in my understanding of this quatrain, but I strongly suspect that Nostradamus simply committed a blunder here. Well, if nothing else, it would prove that he was as failable as any other human.

A past embusche: & deceus couper veine.

Meadows flooded, new bovine pestilence,
Sect to bend, to humanity vain joy:
Of law without law, put in the front for proof,
History of ambushes, and deceptive cuts of veins.

Ambiguous

The bovine pestilence is likely Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy, commonly known as Mad Cow Disease. It is deadly for humans to eat as it wastes the brain. The rest of the quatrain can be somewhat deciphered according to some basically standard moral thinking. Just what the sect is I am not certain, though knowing Nostradamus's Christian thinking.

Downfall of Napoléon Bonaparte

In 1913 Napoléon was still able to win victories. He won more than he lost. And he had an army of up to 400,000 at the peak. It was very large, but so were the armies that converged not on Napoléon but on France itself. These numbered up to a million. The only small force was the British force of about 56,000, who marched into France from Spain. In France, Napoléon kept winning victory after victory, but he had only about 70,000 men, while the allied forces against him still numbered over a million. The allied advance pierced all the defenses. It was a veritable flood of troops. France was exhausted. Napoléon abdicated and escaped, eventually to be exiled to Elba.

La bouche & gorge en feruides pustules,
De sept Grands cinq, toux distillante nuire :
Pluye si longue, à non mort tournent bulles,
Le Grand mourir, qui trestout faisoir luire.

The mouth and throat has injurious pustules,
Of seven Great five, coughs distill night:
Rain for a long time, in death turns bubbles,
The Great dies, which all frasoir shine.

Ambiguous

The quatrain is obviously talking about a major sickness that infects the mouth and throat areas. The third line indicates that the cause comes from above, i.e. a biological attack of some sort, maybe carried via the clouds. The trouble is, I cannot translate the word frasoir. It could be frasoit which is similarly ambiguous to me.
